Guess that depends on how thorough you want to be. Will you get a marked drop in temp across a 12' run? Probably not enough to matter. But will all your pipes and hoses condense and sweat? You betcha. When we got up and running it took about a month before we had the time to actually get up there and insulate our glycol piping (ours is a 2" main run in an overhead halo over the cellar). Brewing in a Rainforest. We use foam pipe insulation on our drops. 1" works for the 3/4" braided vinyl. Get some black vinyl electrical type tape and use it to seal edges, cut up insulation to make covers for valves and fittings, etc.

On teflon tape. Yep, use some kind of pipe dope on your brass.
