  • premier stainless keg washer

    Hey Forum,

Im looking for some feed back from other breweries on the wash times for the the two station single reservoir automatic keg washer . What are some of the times folks are running on this machine? After opening quite a few kegs and noticing them not cleaned we got away from the factory setting and set our wash times here is what were doing (which seems excessive):

    Water Rinse:
    shell: 20 seconds
    spear: 10 seconds

    Caustic:
    Shell: 360 seconds
    Spear: 360 seconds

    Water Rinse:
    Shell: 20 seconds
    Spear: 10 seconds

    Sanitizer
    Shell: 15 seconds
    Shell: 8 seconds
    Hood: 60 seconds

Also we are using PBW from five star for our caustic cycle.
We also doing 50/50 mix water and five star sani-clean

    Any feedback would be appreciated

If you are going with Five Star products I would suggest Acid#6 for your keg washing. It's a phosphoric/nitric acid blend with a detergent designed precisely for this application. You should only need 2 minutes run with the acid. For the sanitizer, is the semi auto using a venturi style pump? I mix 50/50 as well with the appropriate metering tip.

I have been using the factory setting but using sodium hydroxide at a rate of 1.5 oz per gallon. Kegs are clean. PAA at a rate of 125 ppm.

        Different times for different chemicals

We use a premier 2 station semi-auto. I recently switched from Caustic (NaHO) to Acid 6. Actually, I switch things up from time to time... When using caustic, I use the factory settings. When using Acid 6, I extend the wash cycle to 2 minutes.

        Factory:
        Step 1: Water Rinse
        Shell: 16 seconds
        Spear: 8 seconds
        Step 2: Caustic Wash
        Shell: 25 seconds
        Spear: 8 seconds
        Step 3: Water Rinse 2
        Shell: 20 seconds
        Spear: 8 seconds
        Step 4: Sanitizer Wash OXINE
        Shell: 15 seconds
        Spear: 5 seconds
        Hold: 45 seconds
        Step 5: CO2 pressurize
2 cycles 10 psi final pressure

        Acid Wash:
        Factory:
        Step 1: Water Rinse
        Shell: 16 seconds
        Spear: 8 seconds
        Step 2: Acid 6 Wash
        Shell: 120 seconds
        Spear: 30 seconds
        Step 3: Water Rinse 2
        Shell: 20 seconds
        Spear: 8 seconds
        Step 4: Sanitizer Wash OXINE
        Shell: 15 seconds
        Spear: 5 seconds
        Hold: 45 seconds
        Step 5: CO2 pressurize
2 cycles 10 psi final pressure

The machine uses different pressures for the shell and spear steps. The shell step is high pressure to wash the shell and the spear step is lower pressure to rinse, wash, sanitize the spear.

I use Birko Ultra Niter and Xpuma for my wash, Birk OX PAA for santi and use factory settings. Contact Dana at Birko and ask about his keg cleaning regime, you will be happier and save some $ in the process
