  • Shipping large fermenters

We're starting to feel growing pains and are considering selling off some of our 50bbl fermenters and upgrading to 100 bbl fermenters. We are going to put the fermenters conical fermenters on the used equip market but are drawing a blank on the shipping aspect of this process. Is it usually the buyer or seller who is responsible for shipping the equipment, and how do you package such large units for shipping? We have long parted with the cradles that we received them in.

    Any advice would be appreciated?

Some buyers will appreciate not having the hassle of arranging shipping. Some will feel that they can save some bucks by arranging/doing it themselves. Be prepared to go either way, and adjust your price accordingly.

Shipping companies can usually help with the dunnage--cradles, etc. But really, it isn't that hard to knock together. Flatbeds are much easier to load/unload than enclosed trailers, but potentially increase the exposure of the equipment to shipping damage. A large pick-up with towing kit can easily haul a 30 bbl ferm (depending on shape) on a flatbed trailer--ferms may look big, but they're mostly air.

For smaller, short ferms, say 15 bbl or less, we've simply bolted the feet to a wood-deck flatbed, added some straps, and shipped them standing. Laying a ferm on its side and standing it back up are pretty touchy jobs.

We've been on both sides, buying and selling used ferms, and have done it both ways. The removal and installation are the big, scary jobs.

    Best of luck--
