  • Tankless Hot Water Heaters

We are looking into installing a tankless hot water heater in our brewhouse to use for cleaning/passivating tanks, pasteurizing filter pads, and any other odd jobs we need hot water for. We will not be using it to fill our HLT at all. I've looked around the internet a bit but wanted to get some feedback from this forum. Which brand units have you used? Any pros/cons? Thanks in advance.

Actually, it is a Tankless Water Heater. If the water was already hot, you would not have to "heater" it.

Sorry, waking up. Good morning. Need coffee stout.

OP, there were several threads about tankless you should search for. But for some of your applications, you may want to look at clean steam filters or clean steam generators also.

The Pros and Cons of tankless Tek

ON a good day Tankless Technology is an Engineering Con.
If your water quality is really bad, I'd advise staying well away from them.
When you install you need to build in a manifold that allows for running an acid clean out loop right out of the gate, as you'll be cleaning them often.
I installed a Twin array of the biggest BTU units on the market that are said to be ASME designed and supposedly the most rugged and reliable made by Takagi.
They offer a remote control panel that will read out GPM , temp and scores of other DATA including AFR.
Your idea for using the system for utility water is correct, but you better have redundancy. Also If you are going to have it, why not go ahead and pipe it so you can use it in multiple duties to speed things up when possible. The more redundancy you have going on, always the better.
Can they be used for sparge and foundation water YES, but I don't advise this even though its being done in many shops, and definitely not as your sole source....
The PROs are they can work, but are way better suited to certain duties that are backed up by a Proper Steam fired HLT system.
      The CONs are
They are by design inherently unstable. The Diagnostic flow chart for example on the Takagi TM50 ASME is ridiculously complicated. Even if you are a Veteran HVACR Tech with loads of experience working on Gas Fired systems, there will be a nonsensical learning curve with this machine and it will turn out to be a major time waster in comparison to dealing with the SImplicity and Elegance of a Rock solid steam heated system.
They are put together like Japanese cars and difficult to service.
They are an attempt to heat water too quickly in too small of a space, and have short term appeal because they are cheap, compact, throw away Technology.
They are not what they are cracked up to be in the least.

        good experience with them

For the uses you are describing they work great - we have 4 Takagi TM 50 in parallel and they provide 20 gpm at 180F since March 2010. Sometimes we set the temp down to 165 depending on what we are doing. We use softened water because of our situation; the water from the tap has moderate hardness. They have worked great for CIP, pasturization and other uses where you need hot water on demand (well, with a very short wait to get up to temp), very convenient and a time saver. We haven't experienced a down side to using them in these types of processes. Since they haven't failed on us I can't say what they are like to work on. We clean them on an annual basis. We can also feed the HLT if needed and adjust the water profile.

The one thing that needs to be considered is the sizing of NG pipe to feed them. In our case it takes a high pressure (2 psi) NG line and then a regulator for each unit to drop the pressure. Your plumber should be able to tell you what it would take in your situation. It also takes an exhaust stack on each unit so that would also need to be considered.

        Cheers

We have 2 commercial Rinnai RUC98's that are constantly circulating hot water through a custom 12 gal tank. We have both our HLT and a hot water hose hooked to this so we always have 165 water on demand. Also have a large carbon filter in front of the units. Haven't had any issues in 1 year of use and it works great. In fact two other local breweries have since copied our setup.
