  • Boiler Water Treatment

I've got a boiler installed requiring a water pH of 10-11. My incoming well water is naturally around 5.3-5.6. I can't find a recommended water treatment company from my boiler manufacturer. Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of what particular treatments work best for closed steam systems, how frequently they need to be checked and retreated, etc.

    Any info is much appreciated.

    Steam Boilers

First thing, no Steam system is 100% closed as is no closed loop. They all leak to a certain degree more or less and you have to build in make up water capability that is definitely automatic. You parallel your chemical feed pump with this make up water system generally. Steam boilers have to be blown down daily to be correctly maintained. You are controlling the chemistry, dissolved oxygen, TDS etc. to preserve the integrity of the interior of the boiler and allow it to last longer. Your chemical feed has to become in sync with your blowdown schedule to maintain the PPM concentration of your treatment chemicals needed. IF your water quality is not terrible you can generally run whats called an all in one boiler treatment. I have used them from different companies and they are fairly similar and are sulfite based and alkaline caustic in nature. Once you get you routine down you generally only need to test the chemical about once a week depending on the duty cycle you are dealing with. I have been in charge of larger plants with very hard water supplies that required 4 different chemicals in addition to soft water being supplied.

      depends...

You need a local boiler expert to recommend you a system. A 'closed' system will require chemical, just as an open one does. And it's more tricky because you recycle the water through and through again, whereas an open loop can be more easily controlled. Most 'closed' systems I've dealt with have a diaphragm dosing pump that injects chemical into the line post feedwater pump and runs whenever the feedwater pump does. We do checks monthly and have found a happy setting on the dosing pump that balances the chemical with our nominal usage and blowdown. But instead of trying to learn boiler selection, boiler installation, boiler chemistry, boiler maintenance, and all other things boiler, I think you would be miles ahead by finding someone local you can trust and stick with a professional to do their work. That's what I would do.

        This is absolutely correct.
The trick is finding a good guy who is versed in the ins and outs of boiler operation and who will help you get your program in line while you are buying his chemical. There are unfortunately a number out there who just want to sell chemicals.
In this type of treatment you are injecting into the return water line. The analysis is done with a conductivity meter and test reagents.
