  • Low pressure steam

In my part of the world, low pressure steam is up to 0.5 bar (7.5 psi), so I can get a 0.5 bar boiler without much trouble. If I get a boiler above 0.5 bar there's quite a bit of regulation, inspections, fees, waiting for approvals, etc., well beyond what is typical in the US. So my question: is a 0.5 bar/7.5 psi boiler going to be hot enough for a boil kettle? Steam at 0.5 bar is 110C (230F) and I would have more than enough steam with this particular boiler - 573 pounds of steam per hour for a 3 vessel 20-bbl brewhouse plus HLT. I'd have to look it up but I'm guessing that's 800,000-1,000,000 BTUs/hr.

I don't know much about boilers but I do know about local bureaucracy and I'd like to avoid it if possible.

    Thanks

    Low Pressure Boilers

Low pressure is to 15 PSIG.
In the USA we use PSIG and Boiler Horsepower.
BAR is a useless unit for both Steam and HVACR work.

0.5 Bar should be ok for heat as long as the amount of steam produced is enough. The last steam boiler I had I ran at 10 psi and had no problems with reaching and maintaining a boil.

IT cn work but make sure your tank manufacture knows this and sizes the steam jackets accordingly. 1Mil. Btu / 30 HP should be enough, but again you may need more at 5psi. This will affect the amount of steam /time as well as its max. temp and therefore heat transfer to the brewhouse.

If this is the norm in your area then manufactures, boiler and brewhouse, should know how to handle it. IF yours don't keep shopping around.

            Hello Scott,

I am going to guess that you are part of the EU, with the corresponding directives.

I am a specialist in running steam boilers and for your purposes steam raising for small brew house, e.g. 30 bbl makes for a lot of hard work.

Because of this, I build direct fired external wort boilers with a low heat flux that easily competes with steam.

If you think I help please make contact.

            Best regards,
