    Currently securing investment to open a craft microbrewery/restaurant in Shanghai. Offering equity partnership to a highly motivated, adventurous, open-minded brewmaster or experienced lead brewer capable of starting up a 15bbl brewing facility. The location will be in Shanghai and project is to commence January 1st 2017. Equity vests over 4 years annually and compensation includes salary and equity.


    Below are some statistics and facts about the craft Brewing scene in China.

    • China is the biggest consumer of beer globally. 2X time the volume of beer drank than the United States. “Studies show that from 2010 to 2015, craft beer in China has grown in market share by about 23 percent.” http://www.foxbusiness.com/features/...er-market.html
    • Want to start a microbrewery in the U.S.? You are looking at competing with over 3400 breweries nationally. Moreover, there are probably 1 or 2 microbreweries within 10 miles of where you want to set up shop.
    • Microbreweries in the United States are starting to consolidate. Big brewers taking interest and the little guys are getting pushed out. It is extremely difficult to get your product to differentiate and stand out. How many breweries just do the SAME IPA as everyone else? It is just copycats everywhere and there is little room to make your brand shine in a sea of clones.
    • There are less than 20 microbreweries in all of China. And of those, I only consider handful good brands, brewing quality American style craft beer and having good branding. The top names are Great Leap, Jing-A, Slowboat, Panda Brew and Boxing Cat.
    • The Chinese middle class is swelling with young, affluent professionals who are more willing to spend money on brands and who are experienced travelers looking for a taste of other countries back home. You are looking at more than just expats and get to share your creations with a new community often trying American craft for the first time.
    • Imports have swiftly grown to 1.4 billion RMB in 2013, or around $220 million, from 335 million renminbi in 2009. There are tons of bottle shops carrying foreign imports but these are often not fresh and of lower quality than unpasteurized and unfiltered straight from a brewpub.
    • There are over 200,000 expats in Shanghai. YOU are NOT ALONE. People do business in English and you are not required to learn the language. 74% of expats are MALE which means a skewed proportion of beer drinkers. 73% of expats living in China can barely speak Chinese and only 8% speak BASIC chinese.
    • The Jing’An district of Shanghai contains over 1 million people, and contains the most expats in the country within a 14.5 square mile vicinity.

    • Local microbreweries and home brewing associations are also popping up all over China. They go to the Beer Fest to show off brews with Chinese characteristics. There were beers brewed with everything from Sichuan peppercorns to purple rice to Tibetan barley. Some were flavored with tiny fragrant guihua blossoms or jasmine tea. There was even a roasted sweet potato beer that reminds me of a pumpkin ale.
    o Are you ready to start experimenting again and be creative with the art of brewing?
    • Optimistic market outlooks based on
    o China is the world’s largest beer producer and consumer; but its domestic beer production growth slows down and the market of mass-production beers is becoming saturated.
    o Given continued growth of income, Chinese beer consumers pursue better quality and various flavors; therefore, imported beers, particularly those from Europe, are getting popular.
    o Chinese consumers and even beer trade/bar&restaurant professionals lack of basic know-how about U.S. craft beer, which has a superior quality and more flavor options than European competitors.

    o Constellation brands who bought Ballast Point are setting up a permanent outpost in Hong Kong to start distributing to China and the rest of Southeast Asia including Japan.
    • The Big Players are getting early because they saw what Sierra Nevada, Stone, Lagunitas and Firestone walker did by catering to the higher end of the market. With China’s growing middle class, this trend is likely to mimic the craft beer movement in the United States

    CHARACTER:
    o This position involves starting up the brewery which involves long hours, hard work and running into lots of problems. Will be stressful and require the blood, sweat and tears of everyone involved. We largely navigating uncharted territory as there are no simple guidelines for success in this budding industry. Flexibility and lateral thinking are a must to keep moving forward.
    o If you do not have anything tying yourself to the states, (Kids, mortgage, debt) why not take a moonshot to make it big doing what you love?
    o Position is not permanent. Want a minimum of 2 years commitment though. Who knows, you might just stick there like Michael Jordan.
    o Someone who possesses a fiery passion determined to get it done no matter what. A go-getter capable of problem solving and hyper-rationalization under stressful situations.
    o Someone who is not put off by the unknown but marches towards their goals without a safety net. A risk-taker who wants to conquer his ambitions and will not let circumstances stop him.

    Responsibilities:
    1. Set up production Schedule.
    2. Material inventory and ordering.
    3. Maintenance and updating SOP's.
    4. Upgrading improvements to existing and future systems.
    5. Recipe control and new recipe development.
    6. Coordinating with bar and management.
    7. Helping coordinate events both on and offsite.
    8. On-call for issues with brewery. You are the Go-to person when troubleshooting is neded in the brewing process. Need flexible solutions and lateral thinking.
    9. Friendly and collaborative for partnerships with other breweries in the future.

    Requirements:
    1. 2 years work in production brewery or brewpub, preferably at lead brewer level or above.
    2. Management experience.
    3. Ability to deal with people from other cultures. Patience, flexibility, logical reasoning.
    4. General Certificate Brewing, or equivalent experience.
    5. Good time management skills.
    6. A good eye for a clean work environment.
    7. A strong passion for beer and brewing.
    8. Good sense of adventure and an open mind.
    9. In-depth knowledge of brewery startup and associated equipment.
