Research and Development Brewer

Karbach Brewing is looking for an experienced brewer with a strong background in natural sciences to further develop its R and D program. The primary objectives of the program are new product development and the refinement of existing processes. Daily activities will include conducting pilot brews, monitoring fermentations, finishing and packaging beers and managing data. The R and D Brewer will work closely with the management of the brewing team to establish objectives and implement green lighted projects at production scale.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute brews from start to finish
• Procure and order raw materials
• Clean and maintain pilot brewing equipment
• Develop recipes and formulations
• Collate, manage, interpret and report data
• Direct and supervise other brewing or packaging staff who may assist with pilot brews from time to time
• Perform basic lab analyses on the pilot brews
• Oversee the scale up of R and D projects to the brewery
• Manage R and D brewing calendar
• Work with brewing, sales and marketing teams to vet feasibility of contemplated new products
• Communicate results of pilot projects to the brewing, sales and marketing teams

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry, microbiology, fermentation sciences, food sciences, bio-chemistry or equivalent
• Advanced brewing degree or certification of some kind
• Ability to present data and results using statistical analysis
• 5 years experience working in a brewery, winery, distillery or equivalent, with 3 years responsibility for managing brews/fermentations
• Ability to develop brewing recipes at small and large scale
• Experience working in a lab environment
• Strong computer skills, especially with Excel and databases
• Culinary or other food and beverage industry experience a plus
