  • Canning roll bearings

With what should I lubricate taper roller bearings in new seam rolls? Petrol-Gel is what I'm thinking. New rolls & bearings came with NO shielding either. Seems really basic, gross oversight. Somebody have a shielding idea for these bearings? Thanks for any help in advance!

Some Teks that we have used

Phillip, we are currently running seam rolls that have zerks and ceramic bearings, but formerly and on other positions on the machine I use an aerosol food grade white grease made by CRC which can be gotten at Grainger. This product is helpful for several applications and positions around the line as it goes on in a very fluid form and then takes on more solidity, so you get penetration into parts.
ON SS bearings that do not have rubber seals etc. such as the original taper bearings that fit in cone shaped races on the pivot arms etc. I would generally pack those with the same grease we use on the seam rolls which is made by JBT [H1LT], then finish the assembly with some of the spray on grease as its going together and it works as a barrier grease. Same on the spindle shaft which is carbon steel and will degrade quickly if its not protected. That seamer grease is the best white food grade product I have found in its range. I was using something like the petro gel for barrier in earlier phases, but the aerosol seems to hold up better. Same thing for chuck assembly. It will work like anti seize.

      Thanks!

Our Cask system wasn't made to be maintained very well. No zerks. Chuck seems welded to motor shaft. Seems built to run to failure and throw away. Tearing the whole thing apart now to polish bearing surfaces and grease the whole thing up before reassembly. That's the only way to get lubricant in/on the pivot points. Live and learn. Thanks for your help. Generally don't like spray lubricants, but I'm going to look for your recommendation and give it a try. Cheers!

        Cask Config.

Most likely just like ours in many respects as we are running ACS-5.
The Chuck is left hand thread.
If its not protected with some kind of barrier lube it will seize on the threaded spindle shaft.
To remove, you use hammer and punch in the holes in the correct direction and it will spin off.
Petro gel does work for that duty.
The spray lubes have their envelope.
With the old style Gold Seam rolls that product will extend the bearing life even with SS-RS bearings as it does get in the cracks when used as I have described.
I have total intel on replacement bearings and parts with bearing upgrades in several positions currently being tested.
If you are interested in that Tek info I can provide it. Some of the short term results are promising.

          That would be great.

Please PM me. I'm looking for better bearing for rolls with straight roller bearings and for taper roller bearings. Good to get some high quality parts. Angelus sold us crap bearings. They won't last long. Thanks!

            Seam roller bearings

            Phillip,

We are just beginning to fix up a used cask manual seamer. I would like to hear your preference for replacement seam roller bearings. I just ordered Abec which were the correct size but no idea If they were meant for the duty. Also, do you use a press or just tap them in with a hammer?

            Thanks
