  • pin holes in hop bags

Is anybody else seeing lots of little pin holes in their YCH hop pellet bags? YCH gives a best before date 3 years out, is this really attainable with all the little pin holes in the foil bags?

    Cheers,

    Foil Packaging

    Hi Rich,

We appreciate you reaching out regarding this concern. YCH HOPS is focused on delivering high quality hop products to brewers. These products, including our hop pellets, are packaged in foil bags to aid in preservation. Virtually all foil used in flexible packaging will show small “pin holes” when light is applied to a side. Due to the foil manufacturing process, pin holes are unavoidable. These pin holes are plugged with laminate and adhesive to minimize the ability to transfer oxygen and moisture through the foil barrier. YCH HOPS packaging is pressure tested to ensure the ability to preserve product. If you would like more information on this feel free to reach out at hops@ychhops.com.

    Cheers,

    YCH Hops

      Thanks for the response.

So the package is basically O2 impermeable even though I am seeing light through the bag?

Not entirely impermeable, but the effect is insignificant:

What effect does a pinhole in the foil layer of a foil composite have on the barrier?

And a good paper with data that shows that more oxygen ingress occurs through the seam than through the pinholes:
