  • Milk tank kettle gas/oil direct fire

Im in the process of making some alterations to my kettle. It's a 1400 Litre rectangular milk tank. I currently have two propane burners underneath but am looking for a safer/more efficient method that also meets my local council regulations.

My idea is to weld a ~3 inch diameter stainless tube the entire length of the kettle (in a straight line) through the middle, mount an oil/gas burner to one end and have a flue coming out the other directly outside.

I'm not sure what diameter of pipe to use, whether I need positive pressure to draw the flame out the flue and what sort of burner would work best for the job.

The other option is to use what I currently have, but it needs an interlock system and extraction canopy which is a more expensive version.

My HLT and MT are both old dairy tanks that work very efficiently.

    Brewery located in Ireland.

    Any help/info appreciated.

    Thanks

When I was a diesel mechanic, we used a large hot tank that was pretty much a dishwasher for parts. It was mfg. by Storm Vulcan and they used a similar system to heat the caustic tank. You might do a Google search to see some pics of the units. As far as I remember, there wasn't any fan assist on the flue. Once that big burner fired off there wasn't an issue with draw and exhaust. Having said that, they weren't the most efficient means of heating I've ever seen.

    Cheers,

Loads of people use internal heating coils with Lanemark (www.lanemark.com) burners. I have also seem burners by EOBG (www.eogb.co.uk) and Riello (www.rielloburners.co.uk).

I am sure there are others, but the key thing is to get the burner tube the right diameter - as big as possible to reduce fouling, but also for effective combustion and sufficient draw on the burner system. Speak to these guys and I am sure they will be able to help. Definitely not my specialist subject.

Thank you very much Don and Dick. Just had a quick look on the Lanemark site, that is exactly what I'm after!

Will give those guys a call today.

        Many thanks,
        William
