    Back Bay’s Farmhouse Brewery is hiring a brewer for the new production facility in the Kempsville neighborhood of Virginia Beach. The ideal candidate will have wort production experience on a professional system, strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills, and an incorrigible passion for all things craft beer.     FARMHOUSE BREWER

    The Brewer will be responsible for producing and packaging beers, sours and ciders to the highest quality standards established by Farmhouse. This position involves inventory management, cleaning and maintenance of brewing facility/equipment and compiling records relevant to this process. Duties include, brewing, packaging beer, recipe development, maintaining the production schedule and directing other members of the team. An emphasis will be placed on sensory evaluation of yeast and bacterial fermentations which will be blended to create fresh and inspiring sour products.

    Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

    Supervision:
    • Provide direct supervision to production team, effectively accomplishing Farmhouse’s goals and objectives. This includes training and evaluating staff, while positively encouraging employees to achieve peak productivity and performance goals.
    • Monitor and perform preventative maintenance on a weekly/monthly basis as required and ensure that production team follows all cleaning and maintenance schedules.
    • Protect and develop staff by creating and coordinating training programs with a constant focus on safety.
    • Inform staff of changes in the schedule, beer releases, events, etc. as well as relaying any changes in operating procedures.
    • Develop and monitor schedules for production and report to the Head Brewer on a daily basis.
    • Ensure that team members have the right tools, knowledge and equipment required to do their jobs effectively and safely.
    • Assist with daily tasks, problems and needs concerning equipment, supplies, etc.
    • Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures are being followed and that the production
    team is working efficiently and safely.

    Operations:
    • Assist with developing recipes and help provide beer names and draft descriptions according to Farmhouse procedure.
    • Assist in updating Ekos: rearranging production schedule as necessary, tracking brew logs, managing inventory, submitting purchase requests etc.
    • Ensure all brewing areas and all brewery equipment including tanks, mill, counters, sinks, supplies, packaging line, shelving, storage areas, brewhouse, tanks, walls, floors, drains, mill room, fermenters, kettle, HLT, mash tun, keg washer, jockey boxes, party taps, etc. are clean and comply with established sanitation standards.
    • Make recommendations to Head Brewer for maintenance, repair and upkeep of facility and all equipment.
    • Direct and assist with monitoring quality and temperature of fermenting beers on a daily basis. Monitor sugar decrease, take volume readings on the Brite Tank(s) and monitor pressure build up in Fermenters and Brite Tanks.
    • Direct and assist with the transfer of beer from Fermenters to Brite Tanks.
    • Monitor the quality, flavor and carbonation of beers in the tap room, packaging, and
    throughout the brewing process.
    • Assist with lab and beer tasting panels to check for quality, off flavors, cell counts, O2 levels, etc. Maintain improvement log on all issues as they develop.
    • Monitor and propagate yeast as needed.
    • Direct, supervise, and assist with the packaging of all beer in Brite Tanks whenever it is
    ready.
    • Direct and assist with racking beer from Fermenters to Brite Tanks and complete related
    paperwork.
    • Direct and assist with labeling all packaged beer in accordance with federal and state
    law using appropriate keg collars, dates, batch codes, etc.
    • Direct and assist with monitoring carbonation levels in Brite Tanks and test for volumes
    of CO2 with the Zahm Nagel bottle.
    • Maintain all required paperwork and records including but not limited to brew logs,
    inventory sheets, packaging records, recipe sheets, etc.
    • Stay alert of order schedules, inventory, product availability and events.
    • Monitor and maintain inventory of brewing and safety supplies for daily operations.
    • Represent Farmhouse at various events, festivals and promotions. Promote good public
    relations and direct complaints and concerns to the appropriate persons as per
    Farmhouse procedures.
    • Troubleshoot and report all equipment problems, violations or substandard practices to
    Head Brewer immediately.
    • Monitor and continuously improve brewing operations with regards to efficiency, cost
    reduction and profitability.
    • Stay current on policies, procedures and developments in local, state, and federal laws
    applicable to the service of alcohol, safe food handling, and health standards, etc.

    Education and Experience:
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • A formal brewing education from an established brewing program, college degree in a
    related technical field (Science or Engineering), and at least two years of experience in a
    commercial production brewery or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • A strong mechanical aptitude and direct experience with a multitude of brewing
    equipment is preferred.

    Special Requirements:
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
    • Forklift certified preferred.
    • Must have own vehicle, valid Driver's License, current insurance coverage and clean
    driving record.

    Physical and Mental Requirements:
    • A highly trained palate and a solid flavor vocabulary are essential. The brewer’s palate is the most important tool in the brewery.
    • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk, crouch, kneel, crawl, bend, and perform repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists.
    • Ability to exert up to 55 pounds of force during milling, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • High mental, visual and auditory focus is required for successful completion of wort production and bottling runs.
    • Extremely close visual attention and making precise adjustments to control high speed bottling operations.

    Environmental Conditions:
    While performing the duties of this position, the worker is exposed to extreme environmental conditions of hot and cold. Exposure to hot fluids, pressurized tanks and transfer lines, strong odors, chemicals, and moving machinery places the worker at constant risk.
