  • Colas question? Always required?

We just became legal federally and state. We are kind of confused about the whole colas thing. Are we required to submit for colas approval for every beer that we make? Ot only if if contains ingredients that are out of the ordinary? Cant seem to find this info and the colas website is very confusing. Thanks

    Hi Beardown,
It has been my experience the feds want a COLA for every beer you produce and sell, in every size container: cans, bottles, kegs, etc. It used to be if you were using “no-traditional ingredients”, besides malted grain, water, hops, yeast; you had to submit a “State of Process” to the Alcohol Labeling and Formulation Division. It recent years with the explosion of breweries across the country, the feds have been overwhelmed and so relaxed some of these rules.
If you are unsure and are not able to reach anyone at the TTB, I suggest you just submit the COLA and a Statement of Process.
Whomever has the most paperwork, wins!

    Prost!

COLAs are no longer required for intrastate sales. You still have to follow the requirements for a label, like the government warning and such. If it crosses state lines, a COLA is required by the TTB. Also, some states require a federal COLA to register the brand in the state.
