  • Heat Recovery Ventilator for the fermenter hall CO2 control.

    I recently installed a CO2 monitor/alarm in our ferm hall. The results are a little scary! We see 1,000+ ppm almost constantly, and when a ferm or two is really cooking, we can see over 5,000 ppm (OSHA threshold).

    I obviously need to install better ventilation. Our winters can be a bit brutal, with a month or more of sub-zero temps. I'd like to use an air-to-air HX (HRV) to reduce the need to heat the make-up air. Has anyone installed one of these in a brewery? Obviously, high humidity will be a problem, and will an HX will probably need much more frequent cleaning than if used in a home.

    We’re putting an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) in our brewpub space, in part because it is an old building with no air exchange at all built into the heating system. But it makes sense both summer and winter. Not sure about cleaning, etc. as it is being installed this week.

      Assuming you have CCVs, or at least some sort of "sealable" FV, why not simply hook up the vents to an external vent? I have seen a couple of breweries using plastic drain piping - and they were a couple of hundred thousand HL/pa. The only problem is you really need to be able to clean the venting occasionally, especially if one overflows. I've used single shot systems, though a recirculation would be better. Afraid I have no idea how you calculate gas back pressures created by the piping to help determine pipe size though.

        I'm leaning that way, Dick.

        THe problem is we have lots of blow-off, so I need to incorporate a trap and drain for the liquids, and some way to flush it all regularly. Should be an interesting build.

          Timm, I 'd be interested to know how the guys that are running recovery are piping off the FV's and out as you say.
