    Cellar Operator

    Jackie O’s Brewery was founded in 2005 in beautiful Athens, Ohio. A small brewpub operation has grown into a multifaceted brewing operation that houses the biggest oak cellar in Ohio and a broad range of beer styles. A true convergence of art and science firmly founded in quality, consistency, and innovation.

    As part of the Cellar team at Jackie O’s, you will work under the direct supervision of the Director of Cellar Operations. This position will work intimately with our products at nearly every step of the process, bridging the gap between the brew house and packaging. This position works with the entire production staff on a daily basis creating beer from wort. There is never a dull moment in the cellar!

    Jackie O’s strongly focuses on safety in all aspects of our operations. The successful candidate must consider safety a priority.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Yeast handling and management (pitching, propagation, sampling).
    • CIP and COP of fermentation vessels, packaging tanks, and process equipment.
    • Transferring beer throughout the process via centrifuge, barometric, and pump transfers while maintaining quality.
    • Proper and sanitary handling and processing of adjuncts throughout the cellar.
    • Record keeping, data collection, and sampling throughout the entire cellar process.
    • Following SOPs and instructions over a wide array of tasks.
    • Maintaining sanitary practices in the brewery.
    • Performing preventative maintenance on cellar equipment.
    • Transferring beer into and out of barrels with attention to detail.
    • Sour product handling.
    • Attend department meetings weekly.
    • Participate in regular sensory/tasting panels.
    • Start up and shut down of Brewery on weekends/holidays.
    • Comply with all production safety SOP’s and OSHA safety standards.
    • Additional duties as assigned.

    Required Experience and Abilities
    • Minimum high school education or equivalent required.
    • 1 to 3 years of experience in a production brewery or high-volume brewpub with time spent as a cellar operator preferred.
    • Experience in a demanding high-paced and dynamic environment preferred.
    • General knowledge of fermentation and CIP practices.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to work efficiently, adhere to SOPs, and be adaptive in a constantly changing environment.
    • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing tasks effectively.
    • Willingness to prioritize the safety of yourself and others in a hazardous work environment.
    • Willingness to take direction as well as collaborate with supervisors and co-workers to innovate, improve, and continue development of all programs and departments.
    • Sufficient computer literacy, writing, and math skills necessary to accurately document/record cellar operations.
    • Flexibility in terms of hours and a willingness to work weekends, holidays, and overtime.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to read and communicate clearly and effectively in English.
    • Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
    • Ability to perform strenuous physical work including climbing stairs and ladders, pulling hoses, etc.
    • Ability to work in wet, hot, and cold conditions.
    • Ability to work in consistently loud environments.
    • Ability to work safely with potentially hazardous chemicals.
    • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 lbs.
    • Ability to maneuver 150 pounds safely using dollies/handcarts.
