  • HELP! Spark Ignition for direct fire system??

    Hey all, we are almost done building out a 7BBL brewhouse but can't find much information RE: a spark ignition for the burners. Does anybody have some leads we can follow? Thanks!

    Are you using a forced air burner or a jet burner?

      We have a jet burner for our HLT and a jet burner for our kettle.

          We use Midco EC-300 purchased from Glacier tank in OR. They include the burner and spark ignition all as one unit and are available with LPG or Nat. gas orifice. Our BH is 8.5 BBL and the transition from lauter to boil is about an hour. We start heating when boil is about 8" deep with wort so some of the heating is occurring during the lauter stage.

            Unfortunately, I don't think the Midco works with our style setup. We have two impingement jet burners that look like this:



            One each under our HLT and our boil kettle. As of now, we're just going to light them manually, but would like a more permanent solution -- just a standing pilot or electronic spark thrower that can withstand the heat.

              This is what we did for pilots for direct fire. It is run separate from our gas lines to burners because we force compressed air through our burner lines to increase burner efficiency and this will blow out the pilots if in-line.Click image for larger version

                I am assuming you are on LP since you have all that copper going on and copper cannot be used with NG.
                Its a mistake to ever use compression type fittings with any type of Fuel Gas. This is very dangerous.

                  compressed air with fuel gas

                  Also, you state that you are using compressed air mixed in the gas lines.... this can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not have "flash-back arrestors" installed. pressurized fuel gas will not ignite inside a gas line because there is no oxygen. If you provide oxygen in that line it can ignite with deadly results.

                    The air is mixing at the burners. Propane tank is in other room, about 25 yards away. Hopefully, there isn't a problem. Think this is ok?
