  • Request for comment: Community Guidelines Draft

While we haven't had any major problems in the many years the ProBrewer discussion board has been around, it's probably a good idea to get some official community guidelines posted. Here's a first draft, if you have a comment, please let me know.

    ProBrewer Community Guidelines

The ProBrewer community is restricted to members from the beverage industry and affiliated companies.

Always strive to add value to every interaction and discussion you participate in

There are a lot of discussions that happen every day on ProBrewer. Before joining in a discussion, browse through some of the most recent and active discussions happening in the community, especially if you’re new there.

If you are not sure your post adds to the conversation, think over what you want to say and try again later.

    Don't Over Share

It's great to be outgoing, but don't share too much or post too many items at once here. There is a line that can be crossed when posting too much and we all know it when we see it.

    Keep it tidy

Help make moderators’ lives easier by taking a moment to ensure that what you’re about to post is in the right place. That means:

    - don’t post off-topic comments or discussions: check the front page to find the appropriate channel for your topic
    - don’t cross-post the same thing multiple times
    - check if another active discussion on your topic has already been posted

If you see something, say something

Moderators are at the forefront of combatting spam, mediating disputes, and enforcing community guidelines and, so are you.

If you see an issue, contact the moderators if possible or flag any posts for review. If you believe someone has violated the Community Guidelines, report it to us by flagging the user's profile or post.

    Don’t Copy and Paste

If you didn’t write it, or haven’t properly cited the article you’re quoting, don’t post it.

    Keep it civil

We may get into the thick of a heated discussion here and there and that’s okay. These discussions often entail topics that we all personally care a lot about and will passionately defend. But in order for discussions to thrive here, we need to remember to criticize ideas, not people.

    So, remember to avoid:

    - name-calling
    - ad hominem attacks
    - Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content.
    - knee-jerk contradiction
    - Comments that we find to be hateful, inflammatory, or harassing will be removed. If you don’t have something nice to say about another user, don't say it. Treat others the way you’d like to be treated.

Violation of any of these rules will result in post removal and may result in a permanent ban.

Quite often people ask for ideas on how to overcome a problem. Suggestions are made, but inevitably cannot always be a "this worked for me under the same circumstances" type of response. It would be good to hear from those making the request to leave some sort of response on how the suggestions work - we as a community will never learn otherwise. It may simply be a confirmation that what worked for one respondee, also worked for the questioner.

So a response from the original questioner would invariably be appreciated.

Does this comment make any sense?

      Use of Language

A lot of the language in this paper deals with what can be called " Subjective " points of view, Making " Judgement " calls, and possibly getting into control trips and attempting to define what another persons intent was. Miscommunication does happen and people can express themselves in ways that others may take offense to in error.
Well run forums with strong industry expertise and the right kind of moderators generally run pretty smoothly. An example from the Industrial Sector would be " Mike Holts Electric Forum." This is a pretty well run forum. On the converse there is another unnamed HVAC Forum that is Draconian as all hell and they roll like total " Fascists." This particular forum has moderators set up behind a firewall in some kind of ivory tower where they cannot be contacted " at all " about anything, at ANY TIME. Nothing can be addressed, or solved, and there are all manner of cryptic and ridiculous rules that are impossible to decipher. This forum I am speaking about is the worst of the worst.......
There are other Forums that are set up and run like Government Bureaucracy which is a colossal mistake. There you have a Heriarchical system of " Fiefdoms " set up where all kinds of subjective tyranny goes on. The Moderation needs to be " Wholarchical " in scope and administration. Its one thing to ask forum members to behave in a civil manner towards each other, but to expect emotions never to be expressed is unrealistic. Attempting to exert too much control, especially over free speech in the times we are in where governments and corporations like " Youtube " are censoring people right and left is a dangerous affair.
In Technical Forums, the moderators need to be the members with the highest degree of expertise in running operations and solving " real world " problems effectively. They also need to be individuals who have time for the task of being a moderator. While this is obviously challenging, it is not impossible.
Your Moderators have to be expert both in their field and in interfacing with a large contigent of members and dealing with things in as fair and equal a manner as possible for a humans who can set their individual egos aside and make judgement calls on the spot.
Also people need to get that " Democracy " means " Mob rule." Its a REAL BAD IDEA. This country was always meant to be a Contitutional Republic, NOT a Democracy. Democracy does not work and never has. This is exactly why certain matters are decided by the Moderators and not the Forum as a whole. They are vested with the supposed wisdom to handle things correctly for all concerned.
Such persons should have a track record on the forum.
      This is just getting started.

Admin, Would you please contact me.
Tried sending you a PM but the system wouldn't allow it, say's I have 120 messages combined in my saved messages folder.
Don't see I have 120 messages, but deleted a bunch anyway.
Tried to re-send you my PM, system still says I have 120 saved messages.
Would you help me out by looking into this and getting back to me?
        Thanks.
