Tapistry Brewing Company located in Bridgman, MI (located just one mile from Lake Michigan) is seeking a passionate, team-oriented, and meticulous person to join our production team as a brewer. Founded in 2013, Tapistry is an award-winning microbrewery with one goal: creating excellent and consistent craft beer. As our distribution grows, we are looking to expand our team with a flexible, enthusiastic, and focused brewer.
Position Overview: Assistant Brewer
The Assistant Brewer reports directly to the Head Brewer and is responsible for monitoring and carrying out brewhouse operations. The position is required to take on the responsibility for various cellar and quality operations, as well as assisting with beer packaging, staging, and various brewing and cleaning duties. Successful candidates must demonstrate a high degree of motivation, accept responsibility for process outcomes, and is required to show flexibility to work shifts and weekends outside of their primary schedule as business dictates.
Assistant Brewer Responsibilities Include:
Wort production on the 15 bbl Brewhouse
Milling grain
Dryhopping, fining, and monitoring fermentation in tanks
Racking beer between fermentors and brite tanks
Cleaning and filling kegs
Yeast management, storage and propagation
Basic lab skills
Cleaning and sanitizing tanks and other brewery equipment
Participation in cellar, yeast management, and quality control tasks.
Setting up, operating, and cleaning the canning line
Receiving and organizing shipments
Comply with all brewing and quality assurance operations, policies and procedures.
Work effectively with all members of the brewing and quality teams.
In the event of process irregularities, demonstrate an ability to take decisive action that leads to resolution, while abiding by sound brewing principles.
Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and orderliness in the production area
Following production SOPs and contributing to their ongoing development
Keeping accurate, timely, and legible records
Troubleshooting mechanical equipment to ensure safe and timely production of finished beer
Communicating with the head brewer to understand and fulfill responsibilities
Reporting safety, maintenance, or beer quality issues urgently to the head brewer
Supporting and promoting Tapistry Brewing’s core values and purpose
Required Experience/Skills:
1 or more years of experience in a production brewery, producing wort
College education or equivalent trade school / military (concentrations in brewing, food processing, science or engineering are preferred)
Passion for craft beer and brewing
Ability to demonstrate repeatable, unsupported proficiency of complicated and sensitive tasks after training, practice, and feedback
Growth-oriented mindset with a willingness to openly communicate mistakes and gaps in knowledge
Mechanical knowhow and savvy (experience with a canning line is a plus)
Solid communication skills
Organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task.
Friendly, positive, confident and engaging attitude.
Keen understanding of food safety and sanitation practices.
A valid and current driver's license
21 years of age or older
Ability to lift 55-pound bags above shoulder height
Ability to lift and carry 55-pound bags
Ability to climb ladders
Ability to move 165-pound kegs
Ability to unload 2,500-pound pallets, 50-55 pounds at a time
Ability to work in tight spaces with low clearance for extended periods of time
Ability to work in extreme hot and cold temperatures
Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and wear personal protective equipment
Assistant Brewer Additional Responsibilities Include:
Responsibilities listed above
Keeping produced flagship beers within spec to maintain brand consistency
Counting and recording inventory
Planning and maintaining the production calendar
Ordering ingredients and cleaning supplies
Working closely with the owners to develop and execute production plans
Assigning and supervising the work of production staff
Making daily decisions on resource allocation to accomplish production goals
Maintaining and operating barrel-aged program
Development of new recipes
Communicating beer descriptions to bar and events staff
