    Assistant Brewer

    Job Summary:
    An Assistant Brewer at Gloucester Brewing Company (GBC) assists with operations including but not limited to: brewing, packaging, cleaning equipment and kegs, operations and upkeep of equipment, quality control, and otherwise provides support to the brewhouse and cellar as directed. It is expected this position to be in training for the Lead Brewer position. Duties will include, but are not limited to, assisting with brewing and packaging operations, cleaning and maintenance duties, and otherwise provides support to the brewhouse and cellar as directed. Operation and upkeep of equipment, and maintaining quality control throughout all aspects of the brewing and cellar processes will be a focus for this position to ensure all beer served is of the highest quality. Hours will vary to align with staffing and production needs.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    Brewing Department (Performed with or without reasonable accommodation) :
    • Brew and package beer according to brew schedule and per the Lead Brewer in a safe, clean, and efficient manner. This includes, but is not limited to, milling, mashing and lautering, wort boiling, cooling and transferring to fermenters.
    • Assist with inventory counts of finished beer, grain, hops, and other raw materials inventory.
    • Maintaining of standard operating procedures.
    • Monitor quality, temperature, pressure, gravities, and carbonation of beers in tanks, in package, and at the tap room on a daily basis.
    • Monitor, pitch and evaluate yeast as needed.
    • Participate in beer tasting panels.
    • Represent GBC at various events, festivals and promotions, and promote good public relations.
    • Ensure supply of raw materials and other inventory items such as: bulk malt, specialty malts, hops, brewing salts and kettle additives, safety equipment, chemicals.
    • Follow inventory procedures for all raw materials, chemicals, beer, cooperage, small parts, packaging, supplies etc. and report low levels of inventory to the Lead Brewer.
    • Maintain cleanliness of all areas in the brew house.
    • Perform others’ duties as needed/assigned.

    Cellar Department:
    • Operate cellar equipment in a safe, clean, and efficient manner.
    • Follow SOP’s to meet quality specifications and ensure proper kegging/cleaning operations.
    • Complete all necessary paperwork accurately and on time.
    • Maintain yeast disposal, and grain area cleanup schedule.
    • Perform all tasks in an efficient, safe and productive manner.
    • Maintain inventory as needed. Report and low levels of inventory to Lead Brewer.
    • Monitor gravities, temperatures, and carbonations daily.
    • Be responsible for ensuring that security procedures are adhered to throughout the building.
    • Assist other departments when necessary.

    Desired Minimum Qualifications
    • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent, with a certificate or other advanced education in the brewing process.
    • A formal Brewing or Fermentation Sciences education from a credited brewing program preferred.
    • Proficient in all areas of brewing / cellaring / packaging / racking production.
    • Monitor pitch and evaluate yeast as needed
    • Monitor supply of raw materials and other inventory items.
    • Monitor gravities, temperatures, and carbonations.
    • 2+ years experience in a commercial brewery preferred.
    • Advanced knowledge of beer offerings (flavors, ingredients, etc.)
    • Have a basic understanding of Excel and Word, and other programs for brewery functions.

    Special Requirements:
    • Ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule: days, nights and or weekends.
    • Must have own vehicle/reliable transportation, valid driver's license, current insurance coverage and clean driving record.

The employee is occasionally required to sit.
    • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 55 pound rain bagss, and be able to move kegs on a dolly which weigh close to 165 pounds.
    • Must be able to work in hot, cold, and wet environments

    Work Environment
    • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
    • While performing the duties of this position, the worker is exposed to inside environmental conditions, extreme heat, potential for physical injury, exposure to hot fluids, pressurized vessels and transfer lines, strong odors, chemicals, and moving machinery.
    • The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate most of the time. Temperatures vary seasonally in work areas.
