  • Antifoam options, pros & cons...

I looked for previous posts, but didn’t find too many recent ones, or anything really comparing what’s available.
We got a sample of Patcote 376K from Hydrite (also sold through Birko) & in brew kettle it’s been generally good at helping to prevent boil-over (at 2.3ml/bbl / 0.77oz/bbl)
We haven’t used it in fermentation yet though. We have had the occasional foam-over, so I might do in future (I think our tanks are a bit undersized)

Any comments on how good they are, recommendations on products, methods & timing of addition & dosage rates?
    Cheers
    Mike.

I use Patco 376 from Birko to prevent excessive foam over during fermentation. I add 1/2 oz per bbl in the whirlpool, along with the whirlpool hops. It works well for me, significantly less foam over than when I wasn't using it.

I don't use any in the kettle, I tried using it to prevent boil-over a few times, but didn't really see any difference.

Just my experiences, take them for what they are worth.

    Good luck.

Thanks Backslope, we had pretty good results in the kettle, so hopefully it’ll do the trick in FV too.
      Cheers

          Foam control IMPROVES head retention...

It reduces the amount of foam-positive proteins that are denatured during fermentation.
