  • Whirlpool deadspace sizing

    Hi everyone,

We're a 2 years old brewery moving soon from a 2 BBL to 10 BBL system.
We have to decide soon some specifications for the new equipment.

We're gona boil and whirlpool in the same tank. The bottom of the tank is slightly conical, 1.4 meters large.
There will 2 exit valves on the bottom:
    - the first one centered to empty the tank.
    - the second one between the first valve and the side of the tank to pull beer out and avoid the trub cone after whirlpool (it's this one we have to decide where to put, depending on how much deadspace we need).
We would use up to 2.5 pounds per barrel of pellets hops.
If anyone has a feedback or experience on this matter it would be great to know. Basically how much trub do you leave behind on a 10 BBL batch of hoppy beer?
    Thanks!

We usually put about a 1lb per BBL in our whirlpool and we usually need about 20-25 gallons of deadspace. We also have a hop dam which helps a lot.

Thanks Junkyard. How big is the batch you need 20-25 gallons of deadspace for?

If it is possible, consider the option to place the drain on the cone bottom, with a standpipe, near the sidewall. If you find that you need more or less height to the standpipe, it is relatively cheap to add pipe, or grind some off if you see fit.

10 BBL, sorry I didn't specify. The standpipe suggestion isn't bad. We had one in ours and I cut it off completely. But always nice to have the option
