  • Creative ideas for sound insulating a glycol chiller

Hey All..wondering if you folks have any thoughts on how to muffle the sound our an inside glycol chiller? Trying to create more patron and event space in our warehouse, problem is the noise from the chiller. Cant restrict air flow much as it gets hold here in nor cal. Anyone built custom boxes around theirs?

    Other thoughts?

Move it outside or put it on the roof?

Glycol units should never be installed indoors.

In a climate where AC is needed, I could see that making sense. If you spend most of your time heating the brewery, locating the glycol outside is just wasted energy.

Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

There are methods of reclaiming heat energy from compressors that can then be used for hot water or recirculated for area heating inside the buildings.

Research "Energy Recovery" systems for refrigeration plants. Breweries can also recover heat from brew kettle steam venting.

On another sound dampening note, you could try to build a sound dampening baffle around the unit. Maybe store grain or pallets around it. Try hanging some sound dampening panels above. Just don't block air flow.

Like you, we can't put a chiller outside, at least one that is affordable for our use.

Our chiller is located on a walled in mezzanine. Our tanks, chiller, and walk in cooler are located in our tap room. The loudest thing is the window AC for the walk in that runs on a cool bot, but its not that loud. The chiller is quiet where it is at. Its a new Kryer Chilly. Some chillers are just louder than others too.

The more you have around the unit, the quieter it will be. Walls absorb and deflect some noise. We use a bunch of those cheap sound foams packages from amazon for the walk in cooler AC. It probably helps that we have 18 foot ceilings with 2x6 constructions and corrugated metal walls.
