  • Assistant Brewer- Greenstar Brewing-Chicago

Chicago's Greenstar Brewing is seeking an Assistant Brewer

Greenstar brewing is the first certified organic brewery in the state of Illinois! We are owned, operated, and located at the restaurant uncommon ground. Uncommon ground is a Chicago institution and has been a leader in sustainability and green restaurant practices for 27 years. Our brewery seeks to do the same! Our motto is "do-good" beer and we plan to not only make good beer, but also give back to the community with continually developing programs including our growler program that donates a portion of the proceeds from growler sales to local charities.

We are looking for a motivated, hard working individual, who is committed to sustainability, and wants to play a part of the organic beer movement. Our Assistant Brewer can expect to spend time working both independently, and side by side with our Brewmaster, Martin Coad, on all the aspects of running our small brewpub. Including but not limited to: transferring beer, cleaning tanks, cleaning kegs, safety standards, proper chemical usage and handling, yeast management, wort production on our 7 BBL brewhouse, tasting beer, and maintaining the highest quality standards. Our assistant would be expected to be the “face” of our brand at all times, and would be expected to pour beer and be involved in the set up and shut down processes for any and all festivals and special events for the brewery. The candidate would be expected to participate in any brewery projects such as establishing relationships with other organic brewers and talking about the importance of organic beer. This is a unique opportunity in a growing and ever popular industry to gain organic brewery experience and have fun while doing it!

    Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated brewing knowledge and/or professional brewing experience, or professional brewing certification.
    Positive attitude
Willingness and ability to adapt to changing surroundings and have a problem-solving attitude
Commitment to making the highest quality beer
    Night and Weekend availability
Desire to learn and grow as a brewer
Basic computer skills including excel and word processing
    Commitment to sustainability
Willingness and ability to speak in front of people about beer.
Wort production, transferring and kegging beer while maintaining the proper documentation and organic practices.
Other beer related tasks as assigned and discussed with the Brewmaster

This is a paid position, hourly wage is DOE, and will start as part-time with the potential for a full time salaried position with benefits for the right person as we grow. Please submit a resume and cover letter to martin@uncommonground.com.
