  • Lab Technician - Full-Time/Seasonal

    Fremont Brewing is hiring for a seasonal full-time Lab Technician located at our West facility in Ballard. The role of Lab Technician is to conduct daily routine analysis on raw materials through finished product. This position will be responsible for completing daily tasks spanning the full spectrum of lab duties- microbiological testing, chemical analysis, and general laboratory tasks that are outlined below. The ideal candidate would possess the required experience while being self-motivated to learn new skills and take on responsibilities within a rapidly growing company. The anticipated length of this position will be from August 1, 2019 to December 27, 2019.

    Essential Responsibilities:
    • Facilitate and manage data of daily beer sensory panel. Assist in putting together lab scale sensory trials, employee sensory training, and occasional customer facing events.
    • Measure and record daily fermentation statistics.
    • Run chemical analysis on beer with spectrophotometer- VDK distillation, IBU assay, SRM, polyphenol testing.
    • Assist brewing staff with yeast counting and yeast management.
    • Complete daily microbiological sampling program- testing wort, beer in process, and packaged beer using aseptic technique.
    • Assist packaging staff by checking packaged oxygen levels.
    • Participate in ongoing brewery process and procedural improvements- help with the design of trials to continually elevate beer quality.
    • Enter data into quality database in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Complete weekly laboratory preparation- pour agar plates, measure instrument calibration curves, and prep reagents.
    • Maintain a clean and organized lab.
    • In addition to completing these tasks in a timely and precise manner, the Lab Tech will also be responsible for quickly communicating QC values that are out of specification to the Quality Manager and any other appropriate members of the Quality or Production Team.
    • The Laboratory Technician is also expected to be able to occasionally execute QA related research projects with the assistance of the Senior Lab team and/or the Quality Manager.

    Required Skills and Qualifications:
    • A love of beer and obsessive dedication to quality and detail.
    • A solid understanding of Chemistry and Microbiology in the context of a brewery, 4-year degree strongly preferred.
    • An understanding of the brewing process.
    • High ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
    • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
    • Ability to work safely and promote a culture of safety through example.
    • Flexibility in scheduling, position will require first, second shifts and weekends.
    • Competent use of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
    • Mechanical aptitude and ability to problem solve on the fly.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • A great sense of humor and ability to laugh at oneself.

    Physical Requirements:
    • Standing for long periods of time (up to 10 hours per day).
    • Ability to move heavy materials (lifting to 55 lbs, moving up to 160 lbs).
    • Climbing ladders.
    • Routine pushing, pulling, reaching, stooping, climbing, bending.
    • Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
    • Ability to work in hot and cold environments.
