  • Noisy solenoid

    All solenoids are making strange noise when opened.
    If I reduce pressure it'll lower a bit but I'm sure they shouldn't act like this.



    Glycol is 33% mixture with tap water which is high on carbonates, 190ppm HCO3 so I was thinking scale could cause it..
    Although it is only 2 month old installation.

    What kind of solenoids? What power are you using?

    Solenoids made for use with direct current will buzz horribly when used with alternating current. Both the coil and the core are specific for AC or DC. An AC solenoid will work fine on DC, but not the other way around.

    A picture of the data plate on the coil would be informative.

      I'm in EU and currency is 400v 3 phase, solenoid is 24v dc.
      My electrician guy already wired same brewhouse installation so I doubt it is not wired correctly, but mistakes can happen.

      Strange thing is that it don't buzz when pressure on pump is reduced.

        Your issue has nothing to do with using city water in your glycol. Also 33% is meaningless and you need to know what the brix is to be certain that what you mixed up hit the correct target. 33% is too light for most places in the USA. You typically want to protect to -10F.
        You seem to be describing either velocity noise or entrained air matters. If your piping is undersized or your gear is mismatched for what you are doing, you are going to have issues.
        What is the pressure on the header and what exactly are you wanting to overcome?

          Hard to tell from the short video but it sounds like a lot of air in the jackets and piping to me. Installing a air bleeder valve at the highest points will solve the issue if that is indeed the problem. Are you having any trouble cooling your tanks?

            There is no gauge on return line so I'm not sure what is pressure. I'd like to know what is causing the noise, and to prevent eventually damage of the solenoid.

            I have no cooling issues, all is working fine, at least for now.
            Air was on my mind too, it make bubbles which could sound like this.
            If this is the case, question is how the air is trapped..?
