As a representative of the Harpoon Distributing Company (HDC) and, by association, all HDC suppliers' brands, the Sales Merchandiser must be a hardworking and responsible team player who has a genuine enthusiasm for Mass. Bay Brewing Company (MBBC) and craft beer. Dependability, a cheerful and professional demeanor, and a willingness to learn are essential characteristics. A background in the beverage, retail or bar/restaurant industry along with career goals that align with Sales is preferred.


The HDC Sales Merchandiser makes emergency product deliveries to Boston-area off-premise and on-premise retailers, stocks shelves at major chain off-premise retailers, and merchandises retail displays. Secondary duties include coverage of sales routes, draft work, executing promotions or tastings at retail, and other activities supporting the Boston Sales team. This position requires excellent attention to detail, great communication skills, reliability, great driving skills, physical labor, and the ability to work well without direct supervision.

This entry-level position provides the opportunity for professional development in outside Sales via hands-on experience at retail, working as a member of an integrated Sales/Delivery Distributor team, and exposure to the entire sales transaction cycle from account communication, inventory taking, ordering, picking-loading-delivery to retail merchandising.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Loading and unloading delivery vehicles
  • Delivering products to retail accounts
  • Maintaining associated paperwork (e.g. invoices) in an accurate and orderly manner
  • Interface with back-of-house staff at retail accounts
  • On-going communication with headquarters and route Sales Representatives


  • “Pack-outs” of large off-premise retailers
  • Transfer of inventory from back-of-house storage
  • Stocking shelves
  • Stock rotation
  • Construction of retail displays, placement of Point of Sale (POS), pricing and other promotional materials

Sales Support

  • “Route Jumping”: Occasional sales route coverage (retail sales calls) when primary Sales Representative is unavailable
  • Other Sales Support
  • On-premise promotions
  • Off-premise tastings
  • Participation in Sales meetings and training
  • Draft work and maintenance
  • Draft Line Cleanings
  • Accounts Receivable (AR) management and collection
  • Delivery of POS (glassware, coasters, tap handles, promotional materials)

Driver Support

  • Route Coverage: Driving non-CDL or shotgun delivery route when HDC Driver is unavailable
  • “Picking” pallets of products before delivery
  • Loading and unloading delivery vehicle
  • Delivering products to retail accounts
  • Loading products to the location requested by retail account


  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Valid driver's license
  • Highly reliable and self-directed with a strong work ethic
  • Excellent communication and time-management skills

  • Ability to work well under pressure


  • The work environment is primarily in the field (metropolitan Boston) making deliveries as well as on-site at retailers
  • Operating a non-CDL van or light delivery truck
  • Constant accessibility via phone, text or email during work hours

  • Variable work hours that include Saturday work
