    Shift Brewer - Alewerks Brewing Company

    Alewerks was established in 2006 and is one of the oldest craft microbreweries in Virginia. We brewed around 7500 barrels in 2018 and continue to grow with the introduction of our second location, the Alewerks L.A.B. (a little auxiliary brewery). Our beers have received numerous awards and acclaim absolutely due to the phenomenal team of brewers, packagers, sales staff, and taproom brand ambassadors.

    The shift brewer is responsible for all facets of the brewing process from receiving and milling grain to carbonation and packaging of finished beer. Cellar work including cleaning fermenters, transferring beer, quality assurance testing, dry hopping, and yeast harvest and pitching as well as wort production in the brewhouse and on the pilot system will be the primary functions of this position. Other functions include helping with occasional packaging/warehouse work.

    Experience

    -Candidate must have formal brewing education or relative experience.
    -High School or GED diploma required, bachelor’s degree preferred.

    Required skills
    -Ability to read and follow written English instructions.
    -Safe chemical handling knowledge.
    -Adaptable and solution-driven.
    -Writing and math skills necessary to accurately complete calculations.
    -Mechanical aptitude - knowledge of basic machinery and systems.
    -Forklift certified or ability to pass certification with ninety days
    -Ability to work independently, and with others
    -Operation of brewhouse with maximum attention to detail and accuracy
    -Milling, Mashing, Lautering, Boiling, Whirlpooling, Knocking out, Graining out
    -Documentation of brewing activities
    -CIP and sanitization of brew vessels
    -Mash Tun, Kettle, Heat Exchanger
    -Tank Management
    -Gravity, dumps, dry-hopping, transferring, carbonation
    -Maintain safe and clean working environment
    -Yeast management including harvesting, pitching, and record keeping
    -Use of proper PPE
    -Ability to follow Alewerks SOPs
    -Adhere to established recipes and processes
    -Communicate changes in recipes or process to management
    -Communicate maintenance needs to keep production on schedule and ensure team member safety

    Physical demands
    -While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
    -Frequently lift/move up to 44 pounds and occasional move weights up to 165 pounds.
    -Work environment fluctuates seasonally with notable changes in temperature, noise, and moisture level.
    -Personal protective equipment and standard operating procedures are enforced to ensure employee safety.

    Compensation & Benefits
    -Position is full time, hourly wage determined by experience and other factors.
    -Position is eligible medical insurance and IRA with company match.

    Shifts
    -The brewery team operates on three shifts, Monday through Friday. First shift begins 5:30am with the third shift beginning at 2pm or 4pm based on the day’s activities. Applicants should present their preferred shifts in the cover letter.
