    Position Summary:

    Renaissance is looking for a self-motivated and organized Brewing Associate to join our Development Team. This role will be based out of our offices located on the University of British Columbia’s main campus, in beautiful Vancouver, BC.

    Reporting to the Lead Development Scientist, and as a member of the R&D team, the Brewing Associate will be responsible for designing, executing, and interpreting assigned development experiments within RBSC’s yeast strain development program. This includes preparing and monitoring a variety of yeast fermentations with emphases on beer and brewing. The day-to-day activities will include the operation of pilot brewing equipment, propagation of yeast cultures, monitoring in process fermentations and coordinating fermentation trials with local Vancouver brewing partners.

    This role is ideal for someone who is interested in the scientific side of beer brewing.

    Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:

    • Conducts yeast phenotypic screening using a variety of microbiological and fermentation science experiments, including:
    o Wort production using 10 gallon pilot brewing system
    o Yeast propagation using sterile technique
    o Fermentation setup including cell counting, vessel preparation, and inoculation, as well as ongoing fermentation monitoring and management
    o Yeast phenotypic assays using a variety of experimental methods including growth assays, basic wet chemistry, sensory analysis, and sample preparation for HPLC/GC analysis
    • Assists with large scale fermentation trials in cooperation with brewing partners including:
    o Communicating with brewing partners to schedule trials
    o Propagation and delivery of sterile yeast to brewery
    o Sample collection, preparation and data compilation
    • Prepares reports and presents to senior personnel, as requested.
    • Designs and develops brewing recipes, protocols, and experiments, with the assistance of supervisors.

    Education & Experience Required:
    • MSc in Fermentation science, food science, microbiology, or the equivalent Brewing Diploma and 5+ years industry experience.
    • Knowledge in yeast biology and brewing science, and their related experimental techniques, and general principles in microbiology, and sensory evaluation.
    • Knowledge of scientific principles and concepts related to beer production.
    • Knowledge of industrial yeast production and commercialization of yeast IP technologies is an asset.
    • Technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought. Works independently to execute SOPs.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in English; clearly express ideas in written and oral communications. Regularly updates supervisor.
    • Ability to evaluate and validate existing and novel experiments and assays through literature research and assay development.
    • Ability to critically analyze and present data with relevant statistics and controls.
    • Problem solving attitude; including troubleshooting experimental protocols to develop new and/or optimize existing protocols.
    • Ability to troubleshoot experiments; analyzes results/data from such experiments to develop logical next steps to move project forward.
    • Ability to prioritize workload and allocate time/resources accordingly.
    • Demonstrated ability to take detailed notes and maintain excellent records of experiment data in an organized matter (written and electronic).
    • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and in a team setting; strong self-starter work ethic/attitude.
    • Ability to adapt and thrive in an entrepreneurial, growing, and changing work environment.

    Position Details:
    This is a full-time role. General workdays are Monday to Friday, with the requirement for flexibility to work weekends (for scientific experiments), when needed.
