Head Brewer Job Description

Seeking a talented individual to head up the build-out and creative direction for a 5BBL brewpub startup in Mission, Kansas. Our goal is to establish a community-oriented brewpub and we are looking for a Head Brewer that can join our team and help us accomplish our goals.

As the Head Brewer you will oversee all of the brewing practices and overall operation of the brewery. Those duties will include, but not be limited to recipe formation, inventory management, yeast management, brewing schedules and quality control. The position will offer exciting work and growth opportunity which could evolve into equity ownership for the right individual.

General responsibilities to include:
• Help design, assemble, troubleshoot, and operate the brewhouse
• Design and brew a wide variety of styles, ranging from classics to specialty beers
• Source and maintain all raw materials
• Monthly TTB reporting
• Yeast management
• Develop SOPs to monitor and enforce high standards of quality and excellence and communicate SOPs to the rest of the team
• Create and develop a Quality Analysis/Quality Control process and SOP manual
• Monitor quality, flavor and carbonation for both the tasting room and packaging
• Teach, train, and mentor others in the art and craft of brewing
• Oversee all cleaning, sanitation and maintenance in the brewhouse. You must excel at troubleshooting and problem solving.
• Work closely with management to establish budgets, develop production schedules, monitor costs, track profitability, and ensure state / federal compliance
• Observe equipment in operation to prevent/diagnose potential problems
• Ensure a safe working environment for employees by maintaining the facility and equipment in an optimal manner and enforce adherence to safe working practices.
• Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove, repair and replace defective parts
• Identify, suggest, propose, and discuss solutions to equipment and facility issues with ownership team
• Develop and maintain maintenance logs on all equipment
• Requisition and order stock parts for proper and prompt repairs
• Monitor and maintain electrical, mechanical, heating and cooling systems
• Monitor and maintain plumbing, gas, air, drain and wastewater systems
• Work with a high degree of autonomy and minimal supervision to support production priorities
• Strong communication and organization skills
• Assist with client and vendor relationships
• Participate in events, festivals, promotions, etc as well as educating and preparing our team for these events
• Oversee and manage all staff working in the brewhouse and cellar

• Responsible self-starter who works well with little supervision
• Professional degree in Fermentation Science or Brewing Technology (experience may be substituted for degree depending on range and depth)
• 4+ years of professional experience in a brewpub or brewery production environment
• Experience on commercial systems, with expertise in a wide variety of skills ranging from recipe formulation to fermentation control to filtering and conditioning
• Intimate knowledge of classic beer styles with a demonstrated ability to brew to style as well as to push boundaries and apply innovative techniques
• Ability to carry up to 50 pounds and work in a physically demanding environment

Prefer candidate to possess basic electrical, and plumbing skills; experience with pump motor repair, valves, heat exchange systems, packaging equipment such as fillers, and refrigeration knowledge
