    Alternate Ending Beer Company located in Aberdeen, New Jersey is looking for a Head Brewer who is interested in putting their stamp on a startup brewpub that will be driven by thoughtful beer and complemented by upscale casual food. Alternate Ending Beer Co. will be a self- distributing brewpub with a retail shop set in an old movie theater that will keep the nostalgia of the theater (showing movies at least once a week in a private room) while showcasing our modern equipment. We are working with the engineer and architect of Victory Brewing and Tired Hands to create a beautiful brewhouse and taproom in a heavily trafficked area of central New Jersey. Our plan is to open in late Spring/early Summer of 2020.

    Our beers will be brewed on a brand new 10 bbl Specific Mechanical brewhouse with a collection of 10 and 20 bbl fermenters. We will focus on IPAs and stouts and will always have at least one lager on tap. We’d like to start a small barrel program from the beginning, with a focus on both spirit-aged stouts and ales, as well as mixed fermentation.
    The Head Brewer will report to and work alongside our Founder/ Brewer to manage everyday operations. This position allows for a creative individual to work on recipe development and help formulate best practices for new techniques. The Head Brewer is also responsible for leading and managing the production staff, overseeing facilities and equipment, managing the supply chain, and managing all aspects of production operations. As Head Brewer, this individual should be a self-starter, knowing what needs to be done in a safe and sanitary manner. Quality must always be preserved and in the forefront of every decision. This position requires strong leadership, communication skills, and attention to the details that fill the brewing day.

    Duties within this position include:
    • Wort production, grain handling and yeast management
    • Inventory management
    • Cleaning and sanitation – we must keep a clean brewery especially since we will be in the
    food industry
    • Cellar Operations including CIP, Dry Hopping, Fining, Transfers, Carbonating and Keg Washing/ Filling as needed
    • Lab and sensory analysis
    • Quality control and quality assurance
    • Ensuring that SOPs are adhered to, improved upon where applicable, and trained to for
    new hires
    • Training, supervising and evaluating staff
    • Developing schedules for production team and running a weekly production meeting
    while maintaining an updated whiteboard of daily gravities, pH and dry hop schedule
    • Ensuring upper management knows the right tools and knowledge required to allow their
    staff to do their jobs safely and effectively
    • Packaging (canning and bottling to be implemented by end of Y2)
    • Operation of a centrifuge (to be added within a few years)
    • Assisting with events (including tastings, festivals, etc.)
    • Scheduling regular equipment maintenance
    Requirements for this position (typical for a brewery) include:
    • Working experience within a commercial brewery (Mandatory)
    • Ability to mentor junior staff (starting with one assistant brewer/cellar person)
    • Ability to repeatedly lift 55lbs up to shoulder height
    • Ability to stand and walk for hours on a hard surface and bend repeatedly
    • Ability to work within a cold and hot environment
    • Ability to work extended hours including weekends, if needed
    • Ability to operate a forklift and/or pallet jack
    • Ability to climb ladders

    Ideal qualifications for this position:
    • Former Head or Lead Brewer with inventory management skills
    • Previous management experience
    • Leadership abilities
    • Brewing and blending mixed cultures a plus
