    Position: Head Brewer Job Announcement

    Summary: As an employee of the Ronan Cooperative Brewery (RCB) you will be part of the first cooperative brewery in the state of Montana. This is a startup brewery and as such the head brewer is critical to the brewery’s success. RCB will support and promote the local community, economy, agriculture, and craft beer. This is an ideal job for an individual who enjoys working independently and is dedicated to brewing extraordinary beer. RCB has a 5 BBL brewhouse with the Head Brewer being the sole brewer upon opening of the brewery in late spring of 2020.

    Primary Responsibilities: As the Head Brewer at RCB you are in charge of all brewing practices and overall operations at the brewery. Such duties will include, but not limited to, those described below:
    • Milling, Mashing, Lautering, Whirlpooling, Knocking out, and Mucking out.
    • Keep detailed notes and logs as part of an overall quality control program.
    • Research, develop, and test new recipes.
    • Responsible for proper handling or yeast propagation, including but not limited to inoculation, pitching, aeration and CIP.
    • Perform quality tests using pH meters, sensory evaluation and other tools.
    • Manage raw materials, inventory control, scheduling and supplier contracts.
    • All cellar operations and tank CIP.
    • Maintain a clean, sanitary and organized work environment.
    • Manage equipment maintenance, cleanliness and troubleshooting and schedule.
    • Fill, clean and organize kegs which includes maintaining keg washer.
    • Participate in cooperative events as needed while maintaining professional composure.
    • Guarantee a safe working environment for employees by maintaining the facility and equipment in an optimal working environment and enforces adherence to safe work practices.
    • Must demonstrate a professional and engaged demeanor at all times and treat every employee, customer, and client with dignity and respect in all interactions.
    • Able to interact with Brewery owners on a regular basis providing one-on-one interaction.
    • Training/Supervision of new hires associated with brewing operations.
    • Work with the RCB Board to review appropriate financial statements, sales and activity reports, beer quality, and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement. Follows environmental and safety regulations and acts in compliance with US laws and accepted business ethics.
    • Must be able and willing to work a variable shift schedule that depends upon the operational needs of the brewery.
    • Develop Safety protocols and SOP’s with the RCB Board.
    • Performs other brewery and taproom duties as assigned, these could include: pouring beer, performing brewery tours, attend brewery events etc.

    Qualifications: Formal education in brewing or a degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Fermentation Science, Biology or similar science- based degree program or a minimum of 3 years of professional brewing experience. The candidate should possess a strong understanding of all areas of brewing science and of general production metrics of success. Must be self-motivated, have excellent communication skills, strong leadership skills and be a minimum of 21 years of age. Candidate must be able to work under stressful situations typical to the manufacturing/production environment of a brewery. This position also requires excellent time management skills as well as very strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Candidates must be proficient in software including Excel and Word.
    Physical Demands: The employee is required to climb, balance, sit, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach with hands and arms. Work on a ladder periodically. Able to stand for long periods of time (up to 8-10 hours per day). The employee must frequently lift 55 lbs and move 160 lbs as needed. There are very high noise levels in and around the brewing area. Exposure to various temperature changes. Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment. Flexible to work a rotating schedule as business needs arise.
