Head of Brewing Operations
Elora Brewing Company is a prominent regional brewery located just north of Guelph. Now in our fifth year of operations, we have become known for our Hazy Pale Ales and IPAs, Kettle Sours and crispy European style lagers. We are a production scale brewery and brew pub that takes inspiration from the naturally beautiful and culturally vibrant small town in which we call home. With yearly growth since opening, this past year we doubled the capacity of our fermenter farm which now sits at more than 400 hectolitres. Moving forward, our goals are to improve our brewing operations and continue our commitment to brewing high quality, contemporary and accessible beers.
About the Head of Brewing Operations Role:
As Head of Brewing Operations (HBO) you will be the jack/jill-of-all-trades and be familiar with every nuance of the brewery. Your main responsibility will be leading our talented brew team through day-to-day operations: overseeing scheduling, quality, consistency and inspiring creativity in our brew team. Communication, collaboration and more communication are all key factors to ensure that the direction of the team is clear and that everyone has the tools needed to complete their job. Additionally, you will be an ambassador for the company by building connections which continue to develop EBC as a community partner. The HBO will join a cross-functional management team which included sales, marketing and hospitality ops. There are lots of moving parts within EBC and it is important that a positive, collaborative culture is exhibited across the entire company.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
Plan, schedule and lead the daily operations of the brewery and brew team. This will include wort production, cellaring, raw material and input inventory, packaging and movements between the brewery and warehouse.
Train and mentor brew staff on systems, processes, and recipe development
Implement best practices in brewing and cellaring processes
Maintain a heads up approach to equipment maintenance and servicing to ensure that the brewery operates without major interruptions.
Represent EBC and participate in industry and public events as the face of the brewing team, including attending, events, and conferences throughout the year
Stay at the cutting edge of beer trends and styles, ingredients, brewing science, brewing processes, etc.
Provide hands on relief of all positions as necessary – to include brewing, filtering and cellar operations
Maintain focus on the long term viability of brewery operations
Vetting, hiring, training and management of brewery staff
Creating and coordinating weekly / monthly / quarterly brewing schedule
Developing reports on brewing execution, quality and expectations.
Experience
6+ years of experience in a production brewery
2+ years in a management or supervisory position
BA/BS in related field. Brewing Science degree or relevant classes is a plus
Project management and planning
Excellent leadership skills with proven ability to lead and motivate a team and maintain a positive morale
Solid / proven knowledge of the craft beer and brewing industry
Success with recipe development on both production and one-off levels.
Technical know how with the ability to confidently troubleshoot problems as they arise
This is a full-time, salaried position.
Compensation will be competitive and evaluated based on experience.
