  • Getting Tanks out of Container

    Have a bit of a head-scratcher, or just over-my-header...

Our FVs/TDVs have arrived but were not arranged in the container as we'd been told so our forklift won't be able to get them out even with fork extensions. Before we arrange to have it redelivered somewhere with a loading dock, I thought I'd put it out to the collective brain trust in case anyone has dealt with a similar issue.

Essentially, the cradle they built around the tanks won't let us pull them off individually so we either need to get the entire arrangement (basically a cube ~9 ft on a side, ~2200 lb) out of the container, or somehow support the tanks while we cut the cradle apart. Or perhaps a third option I haven't thought of? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

    Flatbed tow truck?

I used a flatbed towtruck recently to unload containers with 30bbl fermenters and it worked well. Used the winch on the platform to just pull the cradles out of the containers on to the deck of the tow truck, then drove over to the brewery doors and tilted the truck deck to its max, and used a forklift inside the building to stand the tanks. Seemed pretty safe and efficient. Just a thought. Good luck, it's an exciting (stressful!) day.

Step 1 - Call (?)Corey(?) over at Westside Crane Service 303-494-2500

Step 2 - Crack a beer and drown your sorrows over the very reasonable rate you paid

Step 3 - Watch in amazement as they unload and set you up faster than you can unload yourself on the toilet

Yes you can do it yourself, and I have even unloaded 120's, but man is that place is good. The price and time savings were well worth it. I took some spectacular shots of super tight placements they did for me once. They are my gold standard for rigging companies.

You need two fork trucks. One to pull them out ast the end of the container and the second to come in from the side to pick the entire cradle, once the first truck has pulled all the way to the edge. Then you have one truck supporting an end and the other end still supported by the container while the second truck comes in with extensions to take the entire load.

As stated previously the standard method is to use two forklifts. The other option is have the container delivered by a side loader. They set it on the ground and you just pull it straight out with the one way wheels on the cradle. You can rent the container ramps from most equipment hire mobs.
