  • Brewery in development in the Sierra Foothills of California -- seeking Brewmaster!

    Break Even Brewing – Brewmaster

Break Even Brewing is a microbrewery in development in Amador City, CA, a small rustic town nestled near the Sierra Foothills wine region in Gold Country. Break Even Brewing is the backbone of a project to renovate an old western-style building and open the Amador City Tavern. The building was previously a bar and restaurant, but is under new ownership and is getting a major rebuild of the bar, kitchen and outdoor patio area. In addition (as a backdrop to the patio, in a separate building), there will be a ~550 square foot on-site brewing facility.

Amador City Tavern will have a thoughtful backyard grill vibe with an aesthetic nod to the Motherlode history in the area. We will have a small, approachable food menu comprised of local and responsible ingredients, and great beer and wine on tap. Over time, we hope to become a hub inspiring outdoor activity (think a place to start and end bike rides or learn about nearby hiking and camping, not wallpaper with tents and axes on it).

There is a ranch property under the same ownership 15 mins away, where we plan to grow and source ingredients for both the brewery and restaurant over time. The bigger vision is a small, holistic, vertically integrated food & drink experience that's in touch with the land and local community. Our goal is to create an amazing food and drink experience -- something special that lasts a very long time and is good for the community.

The project is fully funded and development has started. We have a Brewing Advisor, but are looking for a Brewmaster to take a lead role in everything brewing.
The ideal candidate is passionate and enthusiastic about all aspects of brewing excellent beer (from farm to glass), not about scaling production or building a bigger business. This business is deliberately local with aspirations of sustainability and longevity. We are creating a rich experience for locals, while brewing "destination" beers for people visiting our community. This is a unique opportunity to lead all aspects of a microbrewery. The candidate should be passionate about the artistry and craftsmanship of great beer brewing, be eager to get their hands dirty, learn new disciplines, and work with a team across different functions (tavern, restaurant, farm).

    Responsibilities:

    • Take a lead role on recipe creation and product strategy (some collaborative work on concept, plan, naming, labels)
    • Lead brewing facility design
    • Source ingredients
    • Brew excellent beer
    • Participate in hopyard and orchard planning and farming
    • Collaborate with tavern staff to create a cohesive customer experience
    • Part time work at the tavern and farm -- this will be a team sport with a shared vision

    Qualifications:

    • 5+ years of experience brewing great beer on a commercial rig
    • Experience developing a brew plan
    • Experience sourcing ingredients
    • QA/QC experience
    • Data management & record keeping
    • Budgeting/costing experience
    • Experience designing a brewing facility is a plus

The ideal candidate is an experienced brewer, confident in their ability to own all aspects of a microbrewery. They are excited to brew world class beer in a small, but thoughtful way.

Location: Amador City, CA is a small rustic town in the Sierra Foothills nestled next to Sutter Creek, near the Shenandoah Valley wine region in Gold Country, about an ~hour east of Sacramento and an ~hour South of Kirkwood. Elevation is ~1000ft with beautiful ranch land, rolling hills and reaching oaks.

Start Date: Some flexibility. Part-time work could start immediately. Full-time work would likely commence Spring 2020.
