Smartmouth Brewing Co., located in the coastal community of Norfolk, VA, is seeking a full time Brewer. Smartmouth is a fast growing brewery that opened its doors in November 2012. In 2013, it brewed approximately 1,400 barrels and has increased its capacity by 50% this winter and will be increasing it by another 50% in the late summer. In its first year of operations, Smartmouth won a bronze at the GABF for its double IPA, Notch 9, and two medals at the Virginia Craft Beer Fest.
Job Summary:
The Brewer will be responsible for all brewhouse operations and duties with secondary responsibilities in the cellar. The primary responsibility of this position will be wort production. The Brewer will work on a shift schedule (a mix of early morning and evening shifts with the other brewer on staff) and will report directly to the Head Brewer.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Wort production
• CIP tanks, cellar equipment and brewhouse
• Harvest, pitch and manage yeast
• Dry-hop beers
• Mill and stage recipes accurately
• Maintain workplace safety while upholding quality standards
• Continually lift, drag, carry and manipulate hoses, parts, pumps, buckets and reservoirs
• Maintain accurate and legible records
• Sanitation of all beer contact surfaces and equipment
• Perform routine preventative maintenance and cleaning of equipment and infrastructure
• Understand uses of all chemicals and follow OSHA standards
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements:
• 2+ years brewery experience
• Possess a mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills
• Hard working, positive team player
• Ability to multitask and manage time while being detail oriented
• Flexible schedule
Physical requirements:
Our Brewer must be able to bend over, twist, kneel, stand for the duration of a shift, lift 55 pounds and maneuver 160 pounds repeatedly. Requires proper handling of hazardous materials and operation of complex machinery.
The new brewer will be expected to start work in July or August.
We are only considering applicants with professional experience in a brewery at this time.
