Vagabond Brewing is looking for an eager and hardworking individual to join our brewing staff as an assistant brewer. Vagabond is a rapidly-growing brewery in Salem, Oregon. In 2014 we produced 400 bbls. In 2015, we will be adding an increased fermentation capacity and larger system with estimated growth of 1200 – 1400bbls for 2016. This is a unique opportunity to join a small team of brewers at a growing brewery in a rapidly growing beer city, Salem, Oregon. This position will be focused on cellaring and utility brewing. The ideal candidate will be quick to learn our SOPs, uphold rigorous sanitation standards in the brewery, and follow direction very well. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with little experience to get an entry-level position in the craft beer industry or for someone with a year or so of work to move into a new role. We are looking for someone with tremendous enthusiasm and energy and a strong work ethic. As with all of our brewers, we will seek a candidate who can fulfill these job responsibilities in the short term and who looks to take on more responsibilities with the company over time. Tentative start date for this position is July 6, 2015.
Core Responsibilities
• Assist with all cellar operations, including packaging, kegging, and tank CIPs
• Keg washing
• Utility brewing work: cleaning parts, floors, tanks, pumps, hoses as instructed
• Driving the company vehicle
• Warehousing, including loading and unloading wholesalers and suppliers; receiving and shipping
• Basic record keeping
• Public tours, education, tastings and interaction with brewery guests
Minimum Qualifications
● 6-12 month’s previous experience in a brewery, winery, distillery or other food production plant; experience in a production brewery preferred.
● Basic understanding of brewing processes and practices
● Experience working in an industrial environment with accompanying hazards and strong knowledge of basic safety precautions and practices
● Clean driving record
● Ability to follow SOPs
● Strong ability to multi-task
● Strong oral and written communication skills, including familiarity with Google Drive
● A passion for craft beer, with a dedication to our core values and beliefs
● Mechanical aptitude; skilled with basic brewery equipment troubleshooting and repair
Physical Requirements Include:
• Ability to lift 60 pounds and move 165 pounds safely.
• Ability to work in a wet environment with humidity, steam, and heat.
• Ability to bend, twist, kneel, climb stairs often.
• Manual dexterity.
• Endurance to work long shifts when needed.
Hourly wage will depend on experience and will be competitive with industry standards. Increased pay will be commensurate to performance.
