    Brewmaster / Packaging
Gananoque Brewing Company - Gananoque, ON

JOB DESCRIPTION – Brewmaster/Gananoque Brewing Company

Are you looking to brew interesting craft beers, with a strong focus on local grains, local hops and local fruit? Are you looking to run a small production brewery, from ordering supplies, developing recipes, brewing, all the way through to packaging? Are you interested in living in Eastern Ontario? Do you have experience in a production brewery? Are you a clean freak? (hey, we had to add the clean freak part)

The Gananoque Brewing Company (GBC) flagship brewery opened in June 2014 in a heritage location in downtown Gananoque (located between Toronto and Montreal, 20 minutes from Kingston). Before then we contract brewed in several locations throughout Ontario. Our craft beers are marketed in Eastern Ontario - centred on the new brewery location - and in the Toronto area. Our flagship brands include ‘Naughty Otter Lager’ and ‘Bell Ringer IPA’, as well as a selection of terroir and seasonal beers that all speak to our commitment to sustainable brewing practices and quality natural, organic, and locally grown ingredients.

Our brewery is a 15 bbl brewhouse with three 30 bbl unitanks, one 15 bbl unitank and one 30bbl brite tank. Our packaging line is a Cask semi-automatic canning system capable of producing 100-150 cases of tallboy cans a day. This year our plan is to brew between 1500 and 1800 hL of beer for our own brands and contract brands.

We are seeking a Brewmaster who is passionate about craft brewing and skilled at inspiring and coaching others to be the same. The Brewmaster will be a brewmaster in his own right, responsive to a consulting Head Brewmaster and responsible for the entire beer-making process. This includes executing a minimum of 2-3 brew days per week initially (up to 1800 hectolitres per year). The Brewmaster will lead brew-house operations from the mixing of ingredients through the fermentation process and packaging, ingredients purchasing and storage, inventory management, collaborative development of beer recipes and ensuring the highest of quality standards. The position is based on 2-3 brew days per week (as a part-time commitment), with the flexibility of assuming additional responsibilities equating to full time employment -- a total commitment -- and an opportunity to grow the position in lock-step with the growth of our young company.

Work is generally performed according to established procedures, without assistance and with minimum supervision. We currently employ one fulltime cellar person / production assistant and casual helpers in the packaging area. Responsibilities of the Brewmaster include:
    • Executing all operations of the brew-house with minimum supervision, including overseeing the work of any brew-house staff, from preparation of ingredients through to packaging
    • Subscribing to and enforcing brewery policies, beer production standards and procedures
    • Adhering to brewery budgets in the management of ingredients, equipment and packaging inventory
    • Dealing with suppliers, especially local agricultural suppliers
    • Contributing to the training and development of any additional brewery/back-up staff
    • Planning for brew days and packaging operations to include work schedules for any brewery staff based upon production needs and labour cost budgets
    • Conducting routine maintenance of the brewery building and equipment using proper operating, preventative maintenance and cleaning/sanitation procedures
    • Contributing to the creative development and design of new beers
    • Ensuring all safety policies and procedures are followed, and addressing all safety hazards immediately
    • Ensuring correct inventory levels are maintained for all raw and finished products that support the brewery operation
    • Participating in brewery promotional events, including hosting and leading brewery tours when required
    • Participation on GBC’s management team
    • Liaising with contract brewing clients, as required
    • Other duties as may be required to sustain the broader operation of the business, consistent with the brewery’s small staff structure

    JOB REQUIREMENTS
    • Availability as of 1 March 2015; part-time involvement before that date is desirable
    • Minimum of two-years of production brewery/brewing experience is essential
    • College degree in brewing science or a brewing related field and/or degree coursework from an accredited program is preferred
    • Strong technical knowledge of all aspects of the brewing process
    • Strong mechanical understanding of the brewing process and related equipment
    • Able to work a flexible schedule, as required by peak business needs
    • Highly motivated, self-directed, and results/quality-driven
    • Strong organizational skills and possessing excellent attention to detail
    • Solid skills in basic mathematical computations and possessing basic computer knowledge, including use of Windows-based software
    • Strong and professional communications and ‘people’ skills
    • Comfortable working in confined spaces and cold/warm environments
    • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position with or without accommodation
    • A valid driver’s license, a satisfactory background check
    • SMART SERVE certification desirable
    • Bilingual highly desired
    • Must be eligible to work in Canada
