  • Executive Director of the Connecticut Brewers Guild

    Connecticut Brewers Guild Executive Director

General Description: The Connecticut Brewers Guild is seeking a part-time Executive Director who can excel in a fun, fast-paced environment. We are a young and growing beer scene which needs an enthusiastic self-starter with a deep understanding of the craft beer market. This person will play a significant role in the continued growth and success of Connecticut Brewers Guild member breweries by creating and organizing events; generating press; and building relationships between the breweries, consumers, package stores, distributors, suppliers, restaurants, bars, and legislators.

    Executive Director Responsibilities:
    • Take and apply direction from the Board of Directors
    • Communicate clearly and regularly with Guild members
    • Publish monthly or quarterly newsletters
    • Bookkeeping
    • Public relations
    • Event planning and organization
    • Membership recruitment
    • Watch state legislature for bills affecting membership
    • Marketing and social media

    Executive Director Candidate Requirements:
    • A degree from a four year accredited college, preferably with a major in business, economics, communication, or a similar field, is required.
    • Experience in marketing preferred.
    • Excellent communication skills are required. You must be able to express goals, plans, and ideas to the Board of Directors and Guild members, as well as to the press, general public, legislators, distributors, retail stores, suppliers, bars, and restaurants. Be clear, concise, and well spoken.
    • Strong networking skills are required.
    • An understanding of financial responsibilities (e.g., taxes) is required.
    • A strong grasp of rules and regulations governing all types of alcohol permits and breweries is preferred, and an eagerness to learn is required.
    • A clear comprehension of anti-trust violations is necessary. Guild/association members are likely to be competitors with one another, and agreements among competitors of these types could lead to antitrust liability.
    • Experience working for a non-profit is preferred. We want you to have a clear understanding of the challenges involved in working for a Board and in a non-profit.
    • Enthusiasm for everything beer, especially Connecticut Craft Beer, is required.
    • Be self-motivated. The Board of Directors doesn’t have time to push you to do your job. Make a plan, accomplish the plan, and then go bigger. Work tirelessly for the benefit of Connecticut beer. If you are lazy, we don’t want you!
    • No financial conflicts or brewery bias allowed. You may not be employed by any other brewery or receive money from any business or organization that uses Connecticut Craft Beer for profit.
    • This position requires proficiency in social media, Word, Excel, Publisher, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.
    • You must reside in the state of Connecticut.

    Executive Director Role Expectations:
    • Passion For Craft Beer: Your life should revolve around craft beer. You know how it’s made, its history in Connecticut, the different breweries in operation and in planning. You visit breweries in your free time. You express your opinions about craft beer in a thoughtful, professional manner. You wake up with a beer in hand and go to bed with a beer in mouth. Remember, the Executive Director represents all that is Connecticut Craft Beer. BE THE BEER.
    • Show Respect And Be Professional. Respect Connecticut Craft Beer, member breweries, industry professionals, and the decisions made by the Board of Directors. Never say or intimate anything discouraging or negative about Connecticut Craft Beer and the members of the Connecticut Brewers Association. Do not troll message boards or social media groups. Do not give poor ratings to Connecticut Craft Beer or craft beer in general on Untappd, BeerAdvocate, or any similar site. Do not boast about your position or your knowledge. Seek to educate others while being respectful of their tastes. You are a professional adult representing a large professional organization. Act like it. If you are liable to get drunk and spout off, please do not apply for this position.
    • Communication, Communication, Communication: The Board of Directors expects a clear line of communication from the Executive Director and back again. Emails should be answered promptly. Texts and phone calls should be returned immediately. Newsletters and updates should be sent out on a consistent basis to member breweries. The press should be updated on new breweries, collaborations, and noteworthy developments (expansions, strange beer styles, larger distribution footprint, etc.) of all member breweries.
    • Networking Master: You should know everyone. Visit every brewery regularly. Meet the owners and brewers. Introduce yourself to the key staff members of bars that support Connecticut Craft Beer. Have drinks with state and local legislators. Know the distributors. Integrate yourself into the Connecticut Craft Beer scene effectively and thoroughly. Again, you officially represent Connecticut Craft Beer. Make sure everyone knows who you are. Be likeable!
    • World’s Best Event Organizer: We have bimonthly CT Brewers Guild meetings, monthly informal brewer social gatherings, and annual beer festivals put on by the Guild and in support of the Guild. Plan them, organize them, and figure out more ways to grow the scene.
    • Be Creative And Think Ahead: What’s the best way to promote Connecticut Craft Beer? How do we advertise? Which events draw the most people? How can we educate the public on Connecticut Craft Beer? What sort of events make us more marketable? How can we keep Connecticut Craft Beer growing? Where do you see Connecticut Craft Beer in a year? In five years? In ten years?

    Opportunities:
    • Salary - As a young Guild, we recognize that we are in need of a motivated, entrepreneurial leader to help us reach the next level. The position of Executive Director will begin as a part-time paid position, with salary dependent upon experience. With growth comes more money and more responsibility. The Executive Director’s passion and competence will determine how quickly this position becomes a full-time position.
    • You will work with a team of intelligent, well-educated professionals in a fast-paced environment. Craft beer remains the fastest growing industry in the USA. This position represents your chance to leave a lasting imprint on the burgeoning Connecticut scene while gaining valuable leadership experience.
    • Depending upon your location, you may work remotely. However, we prefer you spend some time each week working from your own office, which will be provided.

    To Apply:
Please send a resume and detailed cover letter to Justin.gargano@thimbleislandbrewery.com with your name and the position title in the subject line.
