Steam Whistle, an independent brewery housed in Toronto’s historic John St. Roundhouse, has a singular focus of making just one beer of exceptional quality that Canadians can be proud of. They brew their refreshing Pilsner with traditional brewing methods and only four, natural ingredients. Steam Whistle Pilsner is packaged in signature green glass bottles, cans & draught kegs, and is shipped fresh throughout Canada to Beer and Liquor Stores as well as licensed bars & restaurants. Steam Whistle welcomes more than 110,000 visitors to the brewery each year to the on-site retail store, for a tour or to attend one of the many on-site events and art shows. Highly awarded for its premium beer, its business success, community support and environmental practices, Steam Whistle Pilsner is now one of the top selling premium beer brands in Ontario.
We are now looking to recruit a Brewmaster to continue the legacy of making a delicious world class Pilsner.
Overview:
To develop, recommend and implement operating plans which ensure an adequate supply of the highest quality beer, in line with the company objectives
Key Responsibilities:
• Maintain the superior standards of brewing for which Steam Whistle has become recognized
• Ensure adequate resources; staff, materials, and services are deployed to meet beer demands while working within an approved budget
• Provide leadership, mentoring and coaching to direct reports, regular communication, meetings and annual reviews
• Ensure the brewery is maintained at showcase standards of cleanliness at all times
• Provide learning and development opportunities within the team
• Sourcing and maintaining brewery equipment to meet production demands, and continually upgrading facility for future growth plans
• Maintain and establish contracts for all raw materials and cleaning suppliers, ensuring best pricing, service, quality, and inventory levels
• Supervising technological trials
• Oversee the production planning - liaising with senior managers to ensure quality, quantities and costs are achieved as planned
• Arrange departmental meetings; providing information, reports and training sessions
• Provide direction and leadership to the Brewhouse, Quality Assurance, Cellar Maintenance and Packaging departments
• Drive continual quality improvement as measured by key performance indicators, including internal and external audits
• Assist through recommendation and assessment with other department managers to ensure Preventative Maintenance schedules are adequate and in-line with our quality procedures and processes
Experience/Qualifications:
• Five years’ experience of brewing an all-natural world class Czech or German Pilsner
• Professional Master Brewer designation, preferably from an institution focusing on Pilsner beer
• Excellent organizational skills are required along with ability to implement quality controls and project manage
• Must have excellent English communication skills, both verbally and written
• Experience of managing staff from various levels of seniority, providing leadership and mentoring
