    Steel Bender Brewyard in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, New Mexico is seeking qualified, quality-focused applicants for its brewer & cellar worker position. This is a full-time, hourly position, available immediately. We are a growing production brewery with a busy taproom with an increasing focus on packaged beer for distribution.

    REPORTS TO: Head Brewer

    JOB DESCRIPTION:
    The brewer & cellar worker is responsible for brewing quality beer in a timely manner following established procedures to meet the production goals of the brewery. The person in this role will be responsible for the operation of our 3-vessel production and 2-vessel pilot brewhouses, cellar operations, and have involvement in packaging operations to produce a variety of beer styles whilst strictly following company process, quality and safety standards.

    JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Safely and efficiently produce wort whilst following established recipes and procedures
    • Following the beer through the full production process; from mashing in, wort production, to transfers, dry hopping, crashing, and packaging to maintain quality
    • Safe handling, mindful of quality, and accurate measurement of ingredients
    • Undertake safe operation of grain handling equipment
    • Participate in basic brewery equipment maintenance as needed
    • Perform cleaning procedures on all equipment to ensure sanitary conditions in the brewery and the production of beer free of contamination
    • Document all steps of the brewing process and all materials and ingredients utilized on a written or electronic brew log and in the Ekos brewery management system.
    • Accurate fermentation monitoring to enable tracking of a beers progress
    • Yeast harvesting, pitching & health (cell counts / viability / pitch rate calculation)
    • Canning line operation assistance as needed
    • Keg washing and filling as needed
    • Participate in and assist as necessary with quality control and laboratory procedures to ensure production of high-quality beer.
    • Maintain a safe work environment and participate regularly in safety training
    • Utilize Slack, 7Shifts and other designated group communication tools to facilitate efficient communication across the entire production team and wider organization
    • Assist with draft system maintenance at the tap room
    • Undertake finished product handling (forklift and pallet jack operation for warehousing)
    • Forklift operation for loading and unloading trucks (freight and distributor pickups)
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • At least 2 years’ experience producing wort in a small- to mid-sized craft brewery
    • Ability to follow procedures and document all steps in the brewing process
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Ability to think critically and solve problems
    • Objective-oriented, focused, individual who needs little direction or supervision
    • Brings energy and enthusiasm to the table by default
    • Excellent planner & organizer, can manage multiple tasks to work efficiently
    • Team player mentality - There will be times when duties outside of the job description will be required, include representing brewery at events and conducting tours of brewery, and others
    • Great palate for beer with excellent sense of taste and smell
    • Proficiency in Google Docs or similar, comfortable using other applications to track and record all aspects of their work
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Flexibility in schedule to work early and late shifts and weekends as required
    • A focus on quality, safety and efficient use of time and materials is critical
    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    This is a team-oriented position that requires the employee to work independently as well as a part of a larger team. The brewer & cellar worker will follow the laid-out production plan and will communicate constantly with the Head Brewer and other members of the production team to meet the company’s production goals.

    The person in this role will be able to adapt quickly to changes in production scheduling and will be able to operate multiple types of complex machinery such as air compressors, glycol chillers, a commercial brewhouse, heat exchangers, pumps, grain mills, powered industrial trucks, laboratory equipment and other equipment necessary for the production of beer. This job works on a schedule of which can involve early morning and / or late-night hours, including some weekend work.

    REQUIREMENTS: Full mobility and physical capability to safely and effectively work in a brewery, including:
    • Standing up to 10 hours per shift
    • Stooping, bending, crouching, reaching
    • Adept handling of small parts and all equipment necessary to the job
    • Lifting up to 55 pounds to shoulder height repetitively
    • Moving up to 170 pounds at floor level repetitively
    • Use of pallet jack to move pallets of grain and pallets of kegs and cases of beer
    • Use of a hand truck to move cases and kegs of beer in small spaces
    • Working in often hot / wet / cold / humid conditions
    • Ability to walk up and down stairs throughout shift
    • Near and far distance sight
    • Use of ladders
    PAY: $15-$18 per hour, dependent on experience
