    Position Summary

    The Analytical Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the management and analysis of daily consumer samples submitted to the analytical laboratory, equipment, and the yeast bank. Additional responsibilities include project oversight, design, and collaboration with the R&D department and daily supervision of analytical lab technicians.

    Essential Functions & Duties
    • Manage and supervise all microbial and analytical testing submitted to ensure accurate results and timely completion
    • Analyze and make technical recommendations based on test results for customers
    • Manage the maintenance of lab equipment, including calibrating, cleaning, sanitizing and repair when necessary. Work with vendors to maintain and repair laboratory equipment
    • Order new and replacement lab equipment as necessary, including but not limited to lab instruments, reagents, disposable items, and general office supplies
    • Provide scientific and technical resource for rest of brewery staff on issues concerning quality, process control, and science-based problems
    • Act as a liaison between customer service and the customer regarding banking and beverage samples
    • Coordinate with Head of R&D, R&D Technician and analytical lab technicians on sample analysis for various R&D projects
    • Provide recommendations, collaboration on R&D projects, oversight of US R&D team
    • Assist operations with the development of analysis of internal samples, procedures, and reports of internal samples
    • Train personnel in laboratory techniques and aseptic procedures
    • Keeps work instructions and SOP complete and up to date
    • Other duties as assigned

    Yeast Bank
    • Organizes and maintains all required paperwork of internal and proprietary freezes to ensure accurate and up to date records
    • Performs initial banking and coordinates with Yeast Production Lab with data and freezes
    • Communicates any yeast or freeze related concerns to Sales, Lab and Production teams
    • Performs billing of new and annual customer banking fees

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Bachelor’s degree in biology, Chemistry, Food Science or related field required
    • 2+ years of experience as a Lab Technician, Microbiologist, or Chemist
    • Microbe identification, aseptic technique for microbiology, both in a laboratory and production setting
    • Safe chemical handling skills
    • Preferred knowledge of fermentation & brewer’s yeast theory / practice, biochemical / chemical changes in product from raw materials to f finished product, and bitterness, color and % alcohol assays
    • Able to conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance
    • Able to train others on quality assurance processes
    • Able to monitor equipment to ensure it is operating properly
    • Knowledgeable of laboratory equipment including HPLC, Anton Paar beer alcolyzer, centrifuge, gas chromatograph, spectrophotometer, microscope, hot plate, refractometer, stir plates, dissolved oxygen meter, autoclave
    • PCR experience a plus
    • Able to organize work and documents effectively
    • Knowledge of fermentation & brewer’s yeast theory/practice and biochemical/chemical changes in product from raw materials to finished product preferred
    • Ability to conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance
    • Proficient in MS Office Programs (Microsoft Excel, Access, Outlook, Word)

    Physical Demands

    While the employee may have a workspace, the time spent conducting sedentary work is approximately 50% with the other 50% of time spent walking, standing and/or driving. Employee may be required to lift 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. This position works in a laboratory setting.

    Pay: From $26.50 per hour
