  • Small silo: Food grade vs. Agriculture

We're considering installing a small silo (a bulk feed bin from Sioux, made of G-90 galvanized steel) to hold several weeks' worth of our base malt when we open later this year (both to save floor space inside our brewery, and to simplify the process of actually milling the malt on brewday). The rep from Sioux has expressed concern that the bin isn't made of "food grade" materials, but rather "rated for agriculture use". Is this a case of an over-concerned sales guy who may not be familiar with breweries using these for bulk storage, or something we should concern ourselves with? Turnaround on the malt, based on our projected output at this point, would be around 5 weeks, at most, if it's filled to the top, and it's weatherproof out of the box. We could coat the inside with a food grade epoxy, I suppose—anyone have something similar they've installed that can offer any advice on this one? Thanks in advance.
