  • Dairy tank mash tun size for 10 bbl

Would a 300 gallon dairy bulk milk tank (horizontal) be large enough to be used as a mash tun for 10 bbl batches? All the different beers that would be made would be no greater than an OG of 1.056 with most being around an OG of 1.045 to 1.052.

Was also looking at the same style dairy tank but in a 400 gallon size. Would the mash bed be deep enough for beer within those OG ranges for a good sparge/lauter?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Plenty big enough for mid-gravity beers like that. Even using 250 gal to allow room for sparging, you could knock out 11 bbl up to around 15-18°P depending on efficiency.

Whether the bed will be deep enough depends on what kind of lautering setup you're using. With something like a false bottom you shouldn't have any issue.

Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.
