  • Repairing steam jacket

I have a 15BBl mid 90's Pub Brew kettle that has a steam leak on the bottom jacket. My question: is there a good way to remove the copper cladding in order to remove the insulation and get at the steam jacket? Has anyone here done something similar?

    Hi,

I don't know what your kettle looks like, but I recently had the same experience with a 50HL kettle - leak coming from bottom dimple jackets. I had to get our steam guys in and hack the bottom cladding (this was stainless) out with a grinder, then got a metallurgical testing company to assess the damage (with a dye-penetrant test).

With this type of crack you may find it is not possible to fix it as when trying to re-weld the cracks they chase themselves. This is what we found and the jacket is still disabled (but the kettle also had a side jacket + internal calandria)

Anyway, maybe it will just be a simple fix.......
