  • Replacement sight glass

Hey guys, we broke our sight glass the other day, the big long skinny glass tube that measures how much volume is in the kettle. Anyone know where I can buy a replacement? I've checked GW Kent but can't find anything. My google searches seem to be returning the inline type of sight glass that you would use to see how clear your vorlauf is or what the oxygenation bubbles look like coming out of the chiller. I'm looking for the kind that measures volume in the tank. Anyone have any ideas or better search terms I could use?

I would try contacting the manufacturer of the kettle.

Throw the word "level" in your search and you'll find them. Example: http://www.glaciertanks.com/TriClamp...es_and_Tu.html

I know GW Kent has them, they just aren't on the site.

Bbump22, our manufacturer is in China and the middle man we purchased it through has been an awful, terrible, bad person to deal with. He sent me a link to a website that had some PVC sight level tubes that were rated to 140 degrees F and told me to buy that....

a10t2, thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for. Did not think about throwing the 'level' in there until you said something.

Polycarbonate tubing is rated to 250 usually. as long as it is supported it works well.

Polycarbonate is the preferred tube for a kettle level gauge. The key is being able to isolate it from the boiling wort with a valve. The other this is to only cip in shorts bursts and them rinse. It also does not like to go from hot straight to cold. A lot of people switch to silicone hose.

So I really wanted to use a material other than glass for the sight level tubing, but when I talked to the person who answered the phone at Glacier tanks he told me NOT to use poly carbonate for the boil kettle. He suggested I get the borsilicate glass they offer.

JustinL, which material do you use for your boil kettle?

TiminOz, how would I isolate the boiling wort from the sight level? Could I just let the sight level fill up as I'm doing the run off into the kettle, then once I reach the volume I want shut the valve down before it starts boiling? Then after the boil is done open the valve back up to see how much I boiled off...but wait wouldn't that then let boiling liquid back into the sight level? Just a little confused on this part.

I don't quite remember it was about 2 years ago and it was for the mash tun. I believe it was just the impact resistant polycarbonate from mcmaster.

I ended up purchasing the sight level gauges that Glacier tanks has for sale made of borosilicate. Now once I get them cut down to size we'll be good to go.

Anyone have a good idea for cutting these? We are going to try to do it with a diamond blade or a wet saw.
